It's been known for a long time that PPIs cause nutritional deficiencies because they deplete stomach acid and of course we need stomach acid to properly digest food. So people are often given PPIs for GERD when ironically enough LOW stomach acid is very often the cause of GERD, not high stomach acid. There's a ton of info available about this.

My sister had GERD and I told her to try taking betaine HCL and the GERD immediately stopped. It was rather amazing. Unfortunately doctors in general don't seem to know anything about this.

I thought I might have GERD and was a on a PPI for a short time, but it turned out the pain was actually coming mostly from my lower GI tract. I did take a multivitamin and some extra magnesium while I was on it.

I have acid reflux, but only after exertion. I've tried stuff like Pepcid (and enzymes, betaine, etc), but have avoided PPIs because of all the downsides.

Unfortunately, for me 'exertion' can mean anything from talking on the phone to listening to music to making a meal with required preparation.
