This paper suggests that autoantibodies to the folate receptor alpha may interfere with thyroid function in some ASD patients :

Interesting in the context that numerous recent papers have suggested that ASD may involve defects in the mitochondrial respiratory chain in which folate plays a key role :

OK, it's the same authors but with over 150 citations they're either doing something right or something very wrong.
Also, in one of the 'Dubbo' papers, those who developed 'chronic fatigue' following EBV infection had altered gene expression including the FOLR1 - folate receptor 1.

Just one of a number of genes differentially expressed and the authors do state the evidence is preliminary but an interesting pathway that may be susceptible to both viral and autoimmune attack.
