I found an interesting article about the Covid 19 virus and immune reactions. The author states that some supplements may increase levels of IL6 and TNF which is not a great idea. Raising these levels is contraindicated since they raise more inflammation. He does offer some things that tone down these cytokines.

Here is a snippet, I suggest reading the article.

IL-6 & TNF
Before we get into the 5 supplements to inhibit coronavirus, I want to stress that you should not just reach for any immune enhancers that you can think of.

The number one cause of suffering and death due to COVID-19 is pneumonia. Immune responses such as elevated IL-6, IL-10, and TNF are implicated in pneumonia [28]. We can call this an autoimmune response.

Generally in pneumonia, IL-6 and TNF (inflammatory response) are elevated initially, and IL-10 (anti-inflammatory response) spikes rapidly to compensate [29]. If IL-6 does not spike, then neither will IL-10 [28].

So we will want to minimize consumables that will spike IL-6 and TNF. What will elevate IL-6 and TNF are pretty much the same; unconscious and unclean diet and lifestyle.

I also received an email from a healthcare provider who warned about the use of elderberry. His rationale is similar to the above link in that it will stimulate the IL6, TNF cytokines

Last bit of information is that there is clear evidence (Source PubMed articles) on the role of selenium and viral activity. Many articles showing normal levels can stave off infections. BTW, areas of China are known for low levels of selenium in the soil. https://www.mdpi.com/1999-4915/7/1/333

Some studies show that magnesium chloride is better than other forms of magnesium and some doctors have reported that it was as effective as high doses of vitamin C.

Selenium also appears to be needed and helpful in critically ill patients.
CONCLUSIONS:
Trace elements and vitamins that support antioxidant function, particularly high-dose parenteral selenium either alone or in combination with other antioxidants, are safe and may be associated with a reduction in mortality in critically ill patients.

I've been taking 400 mcgs a day of selenium for months now. Looks like I have very good reason to continue! Thanks for such great info/thread.

Its almost ridiculous we have no Major Scientists helping us Figure This Out, folks with autoimmune problems.

I have elderberry syrup in the fridge. I rarely take it because "I think it may be not great to increase these immune reactions"...yet I still believe perhaps I should take it in an acute moment.

If in fact we have this antiviral phenotype...we have a bit of a chance...against corona.

And the research suggests Selenium will increase the immune response including IL-6.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3723386/

I just got selenium...we took it for one week and now we stopped.

I found 3-4 references in that paper that said low selenium levels were found to increase IL-6 and only one that said selenium and vitamin e, together, slightly increased it.

Did I miss something? I think the vast majority of research says that selenium is anti-inflammatory.

I'm just too cognitively exhausted (plus is after 2 pm)...so....I know nothing at the moment. So maybe 2 hours ago I was convinced of something I read, now I"m no longer convinced..that happens alot around here.

@LINE It is common knowledge that certain parts of elderberry are poisonous, perhaps that is part of the method of action? Also, gumweed is shown to lower IL-6 in humans, whereby high IL-6 is part of the cytokine storm for covid: https://www.herbs-info.com/grindelia.html, this site also has a list of contraindictation which is great. Lots of sites talk about how great something is but rarely talk about reasons not to take something which is what I look for when thinking of my next experiment.
