Off the top of my head, the purpose of studying the extra cellular matrix is important for growing cells in vitro - if you don't replicate the real world conditions, any experiments done might have different results in vivo. Or more often, you can't culture the cells at all. Stem cells for example, have a whole host of 'support' cells that produce suitable extra cellular conditions for them to survive for a long time with minimal disruption to their DNA.
