Science Magazine's March 9 feature "Intestinal Barriers Protect Against Disease" (behind a paywall unfortunately) cites causes of "leaky" cell-cell junctions contributing to inflammation and autoimmune diseases:
1. Inflammatory Bowel Disease--
Clorf106 mutation which causes barrier breakdown
2. Systemic Inflammation-- hyperglycemia can cause the gut barrier to be "leaky"
3. Autoimmune Disease-- pathogenic microbiome bacteria can cause barrier breakdown in those genetically predisposed to autoimmunity
