Advice please on COMT++/MTR mutations. Methyl donors yes or no?

I just got my 23andme/ nutrahackers results back and I am unfortunately not much of an expert in this field. Due to my COMT mutations I am advised to avoid methyl donors, but then due to the MTR/MTRR mutations I am supposed to encourage them. Which is more important? What would theoretically happen if I do take methyl donors in terms of metabolic reactions? What happens if I don't? I also seem to have a detox issue. Should I be considering chelation? Any advice welcome! Thanks!

I can’t speak to your genetic status, but as a general rule, a low blood concentration of methyl donors can cause many downstream metabolic problems, whereas a high blood concentration of methyl donors is not definitively known to have any risks.

Hope this helps.

I also have mtr and comt homozygous and don’t really know what to do. FWIW I’m trying to supplement with methyl donors just to see if it makes any difference. It does not, as all other supps I’ve tried.

Please also consider that just because the 23andMe test mentions you have a mutation, that does not necessarily mean it is turned on (active) in your case. With regards to the impact of methylation you can experiment a little with different supplements and food. But slowly and one at a time to see whether you feel an impact. Look into things like vitamins B9 and B12, choline, CoQ10, methionine (amino acid), betaine, SAMe.

You can have your homocysteine, B12, B9, Biopterin (BH4) neurotransmitters, microbiome, and amino acid levels tested, all of which will provide far more useful, actionable information than the 23andMe.

Regarding detoxing, this is not something to take lightly. Work with an experienced functional/integrative medicine doctor. First do the necessary testing for toxic metals and chemicals unchallenged by a chelating agent to see where the issues are, and if the levels are high enough to even worry about it.
