"We've discovered that there is an entire class of under-appreciated protein variants that can have an immense impact on our immune function,"

This involves transponsons. While I don't have much hope that general genetic studies will reveal the secret of ME, looking for specific genes of interest might have better luck.

If the predisposition for ME isn't due to specific genes, knowledge of proteins such as these might reveal possible feedback loops. Maybe ME causes a change in something which in turn alters the production or effect of such proteins. Imagine if IL-17, released during immune response, had just the right shape to be "sticky" when it bumps into IFNAR2, reducing its effectiveness, and maintaining production of IL-17.
