note to moderators: although this would normally go in the advocacy forum, here seems the right place to post as paywalls are a huge problem for those of us interested in the Latest Research.

Fed up of not being able to access that key paper?
Please sign the petition for Open Acces to Federal Government-funded research

ETA: you need to register with the site, but that only involves entering first name/last name and email address. That's it.

This is appeal reached me from eLife, the new Open Access journal being set up to rival top journals like Nature and Science:

I urge you to sign the White House petition requiring free access to scientific journal articles arising from taxpayer-funded research. The petition is open to U.S. and non-U.S. citizens. Please sign today and encourage your colleagues, family, and friends to do the same
from their website:
“Science is cumulative. But to be truly cumulative, we need to be able to read and understand what has come before us. And this comes down to an issue of access.

“Many scientific papers are locked away behind paywalls. But the federal government pays for nearly all of this research! So not only should we have access to it in order to allow science to build upon itself, but as a citizenry we have paid for this research and should be able to access it.

Access2Research is a movement to “Require free access over the Internet to journal articles arising from taxpayer-funded research.” And it has recently begun a petition over at Whitehouse.gov…”

Just to say this has now reached the minimum target of 25,000 signatories which means it will at least pass across the desk of the Chief of Staff - thanks to all those who have signed to date. The petition remains open until19 June and the more that sign the more weight it will carry, so please do sign it if you haven't already. Thanks.
