Aminophylline (or similarly theophylline) are getting some attention as a novel treatment for IBS-D and the subsequent pain that goes with it due to visceral hypersensitivity.

Research is looking at the regulation of adenosine receptors. A2B adenosine receptors are involved in control of intestinal secretion, motility and sensation, and mainly expressed in the peripheral tissues such as the large intestine.

Aminophylline and theophylline are A2B receptor antagonists.
