Elevated IgE

Hi,

I had my IgE levels checked recently and they were around 167 kU/L, which is high. I was wondering if anyone has had experience with this. I had a stool test for parasites and nothing was found (not CDSA). Also, white blood cell counts look sane, so no blood cancers. Any thoughts on which kind of doctor I should see? The doctor who performed the test is a functional doctor. I'm wondering if I should see a specialist, if so what kind?

Stool test: which one did you get?

Was it just the standard no-frills test, which will often come up negative? Or a PCR test for specific parasites? Or a test using fixative (also for specific parasites). We ended up (accidentally) doing a side-by-side test (i.e. all three tests on the same stool), and only the PCR test came up positive.

We found this website to be of great help: http://www.badbugs.org/ (albeit a bit depressing from the years of misdiagnosis and then refusal to treat the poor person had to endure).

We had a diagnosis, but the first treatment was ineffective. The Bad Bugs site led us to the CDD in Sydney (Australia). At the first appointment, the GI specialist looked down the long list of blood tests and results and could easily attribute a few of the results to parasites, IgE amongst them.

I have elevated IgE -- in the 300s. But no one has been able to discuss why it's so high. I had a sample done at RedLabs and it did find dysbiosis. However, despite abx use, my IgE is a little higher than it was in the past...

My understanding is that IgE levels in this sort of range probably mean nothing much. The person is statistically more likely to have allergy but if there are no signs of allergy it may mean nothing. A simple screen for parasites seems sensible. I think you have to make your own decision on whether or not to consult someone else if you are not happy with the interpretation of the clinician who ordered the test.

FYI: Our IgE was up around 1300 for a long time. After the first round of antibiotics (10 days of doxycycline), we had a false negative stool test (quite common due to intermittent 'shedding').

The CDD site includes a link to a report of a side-by-side comparison of plain stool test with a fixative one: http://www.cdd.com.au/pages/disease_info/parasites.html. It makes the point that a plain stool test never detects the parasite that was the subject of that paper.

Your IgE is very low, though. We'd be happy to plummet to that level. I'd ignored the original number to some extent because Americans always seem to have slightly different units with different numbers of zeros after things

The first test (a PCR test) came back negative.

Next for the oh-so-messy and yukky test with fixative and many jars. This is the one the CDD GI specialist has asked for.

I have IgE of about 600. It used to around 1000-1200, but it almost halved after course of Quensyl. I still believe that IgE is in the root of my illness (low grade fevers).

600 is quite high.

I see IgE as a sign rather than as a cause in our case.
