Interesting section on population migration and paleolithic remnants in Ice age Europe.
I always feel a bond with my paleolithic european ancestors as the winter solstice nears.
The Balkans were the centre of a highly developed neolithic culture - which makes sense, if there was cultural continuity there from before the ice age.
Just off out to adjust my stone circle.

This stuff is highly speculative. Some of the major diseases they mention are dependent on large populations to maintain human transmission--which is why plague, for example, didn't appear until Late Antiquity, as far as we know--or evolved from diseases of domesticated animals, such as measles and smallpox.
Also, microbes evolve way faster than we do.
