I won't post the whole thing in case they remove it at their end ;D
New evidence linking mouse virus and chronic fatigue

A federal study published Monday raises further questions about a possible link between chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and a mouse virus.

The researchers found that the blood of 32 of 37 patients (86.5 percent) diagnosed with CFS contained murine leukemia virus-related viruses (MLVs). But when they looked at healthy blood donors, they found that just three of 44 (6.8 percent) had the viruses, which can cause leukemia or cancers in mice.

""Further studies are needed to determine whether the same strong association with MLV-related viruses is found in other groups of patients with CFS, whether these viruses play a causative role in the development of CFS, and whether they represent a threat to the blood supply,"" the authors concluded in their study, which was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

""We haven't studied enough people, we don't know enough about the mechanisms,"" co-author Dr. Harvey J. Alter told reporters in a conference call.

CFS is a complex illness whose cause is not known and for which no diagnostic test or approved treatment exists. Despite the fact that Monday's study finds no more than an association, researchers from France and Canada suggested in an accompanying commentary that there is enough evidence to support initiating trials to see whether antiretroviral drugs like those used to treat the virus that causes AIDS might help people who have both chronic fatigue syndrome and are infected with MLV.

The possible link emerged last year when DNA from a similar virus -- called xenotropic murine leukemia virus-related virus (XMRV) -- was found in blood from two-thirds (67 percent) of 101 CFS patients versus eight of 218 (3.7 percent) of healthy controls.

But researchers were perplexed when four later studies found no murine leukemia virus in CFS patients' blood.

""Very good laboratories have come up with disparate results,"" Alter said. ""We think there are reasons for this. We think it's in the patient populations rather than in the laboratory testing, though the latter has not been completely ruled out.""

He added, ""We need to sort it out.""

Monday's study underscores how messy science can be. ""These results do raise as many questions as they answer,"" said Dr. Steve Monroe, director of the division of high-consequence pathogens and pathology at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. ""Clearly, the different findings from different laboratories now that have been reported suggest that there are still a lot of things about this virus that we do not know.""

I am blown away about the UK, what sort of fascist state is it where they control the media so tightly? I mean its bad in US too with Fox news paying the republican party a million dollars; in bed together, but at least there is a bunch of coverage from variety of sources still.

I haven't heard about a FOX payout to the Republicans. But the remaining televised media outlets in the US are all squarely in the Democratic tank. In my 10 plus years as a writer/producer I can count the Republicans I've met on one hand.

Media coverage somewhat UNbalanced

From Opensecrets.org article mentioned in post above:

"The overall trend shows that all the media conglomerates donated disproportionately more to Democrats from 1990 to 1994. In 1996, they began to favor Republicans with an average margin of about 8 percentage points until 2008, when Democrats had all six (including News Corp.) giving them half, or more, of all donations. "

Stations broadcasting in my area:

CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, MSNBC......liberal. FOX....conservative.

Yes, there is a "BUNCH of coverage from a variety of sources" a quote from post #3.

Looks a little unbalanced to me.

"Rupert Murdoch, who has never been shy about making his political views known, has voted with his sizable checkbook.

Murdoch's News Corp. has made a $1 million donation to the Republican Governors Association, triggering swift criticism from Democrats that a contribution of that magnitude casts a shadow on his media properties, particularly Fox News. "

Recovery soon, maybe it seemed like rt wing in minority when you were in the business because most journalists have a college degree and seems like most reasonable educated people would appear to be "left" if they are merely trying to be objective and do investigative journalism. I mean look at, Noam Chomsky pointed out in his film "manufacturing consent" that the NY times even catered to propaganda and covering up for our govmt in their bogus coverage of the east timor genocide and that is considered to be "liberal elite" by jokester sarah palin. I don't have a lot of faith in mainstream media to get us the all the important or full stories and that is why I peruse a variety of sources when I want to figure something out, I am disappointed in England on xmrv as in the US there is a sort of mythology that european media might be more forthright than in US.

It does seem like a lot of americans watch fox news though and in that sense the right wing has a stranglehold on the news, fox seems like a machine of hate to get people blaming their neighbor for all their problems and not focus on how poor people or immigrants take a very small slice of the pie but its really a shell game where the wealth keeps getting more redistributed to a small percentage of the wealthiest 1-2% ie bank bail out, thats the big money out of our tax money to worry about, not the food stamps your sick neighbor uses. Anyway, I just want real news not doofases like glen beck spouting off their ill informed ridiculous opinons, but rather people like Amy Goodman who put their ars on the line to get true news.

You almost need 5 liberal news networks to balance out the one "conservative" network, considering the amount of ridiculous BS that's spewed out of there on a regular basis, not to mention their constant fear and hate mongering tactics to get viewers/push their agendas.

Really though, no one should get their news from any American television network barring maybe PBS. :p You're far better off with a printed publication like the Economist or the CS Monitor (or their online counterparts.) I know, it's simpler to stare mindlessly into the boob tube and be told what to think than to read articles from multiple reliable (established) sources and decide for yourself. Alas, I realize that's asking too much for most people in this country.

Xrayspex,

There is nothing reasonable about this statement- "most reasonable college educated appear to be left"

let's leave it at that.

I don't mean they are all truly "left", that is the propaganda, I mean I get the impression that stations like fox spin it that way when you have someone who seems truly academic or super educated, that they must be left, like saying obama is a socialist when to me his admin. is just bush-lite in a lot of matters, and I don't consider myself "left" or "right" anymore, but yea, you're right we're getting into controversial discussion territory. I would just love to get a reporting of the "facts" as much as that is possible and then the room to decide for myself what it means, but honestly, how often do we see that sort of reporting in the mainstream? Its usually super emotional hype and often propaganda w/ an agenda. I just heard on NPR today for example during a show focusing on wrongly reported incidents that then get spun into the cultural mythology as true that one such incident was the kitty genovese murder and another was that it is likely untrue that "hippies" in the 60s as well as activists last year ever really spit on vets or called them babykillers, that was manufactured for a reason, researchers could find no first person accounts of that being known to happen but that was reported again, erroneously on fox news apparently last year, and I can guess why.

Not to harp on fox they are just an easy target to use for an example and a well known one. interestingly so that I don't appear too partisan they also revealed on the show today tht its a myth that rosa parks was just a little old lady that one day decided to rebel, she was actually an activist and she later got into malcolm x (and the point isnt whether that is ok or not ok, I won't even go there) the point is that people like the idea of the non-violent self sacrificing blue collar worker tht just one day rises up and said they had enough, they don't want to know that her story was more calculated and she wasn't a pacifist (again I am not passing judgement on whether she should be one way or the other, just that we were sold a bit of a paul bunyan tale on the circumstances and probly for a reason). I have heard NPR do shows that could be construed as "right" or "left" but I bet you some folks would call them part of the "liberal media elite" because it tends to be heady, I know a tea partier that doesn't trust anyone who went to college because he feels they just get brainwashed into untruths......scary he would think that to me. Maybe ignorance is bliss.

(oh in regard to kitty g that murder from the 60s too tired to type what the altered part of the story is but yea she did get murdered but it apparently wasnt exactly that psychological phenomenon surrounding it that always gets linked to it...there was stretch of the truth, maybe its at the npr site, can explain later if interetsed)

I heard the same thing about Rosa Parks- which I don't think would detract in any way from the importance of what she did. But, it doesn't seem to have been a spontaneous incident in the way we typically think of it.

I hope you're right about the Vietnam bit. I would rather think someone lied about it then to think those soldiers were actually spit on.

As far as the media right/left divide- I'm not speaking from a perception point of view- I am factually speaking from experience that inside the world of television Republicans are not visible. FOX is a notable exception. I worked in full-time and freelance capacities at many well known networks, and saying you're a Republican out loud is pretty close to professionally slitting your own throat.

It's not Fox's fault that people don't watch the other 5! I watched the other 5 for years, and did not realize what I was missing until I heard O'Reilly on the radio, then I started watching his show, he makes a lot of sense, even with my muddled brain!

Yeah, most people I know are busy raising their children, so that does not leave much down time!

Not sure that CS Monitor is "fair"? Don't have much time to read much for pleasure or knowledge.

Hey, Dipic, is your picture going to be used for Activists reasons? Have not come across anything stating this, but I thought you had offered?

oh dear.
I am concerned that the behavior and activity of Glenn Beck recently is reminscent of Hitler's tactics, whip up fear and hatred at your brothers and sisters and divert their attention away from the man behind the screen really running the show. :(

I think a lot of people watch Fox news because they hear something, and are like why have I never heard this before when it has been going on for years! When you have busting your ass and paying taxes for years and then you find out that Washingoton is just pissing it away on some bogus Stimulus! What do you expect? How about taking that money and doing some real researche for the Millions of Americans that have been sick for a Generation and counting!

Who do you think hires people? Street bums? People need to have a good amount of money in order to hire, right? I don't care how much money someone else has, more power to them, we do have elections and can vote people in and out, so corruption does not need to continue. I know I will always be poor, but so many others have it worse than I do, so I always look for the postives!

I mean is it fair that I am as sick as I am? I mean people could just say, why me? Well it's going to/bound to happen to someone!

Have you ever watched Glenn Beck? or do you just base your judgement on what other's say and (falsely) report?

I used to think that the Democrats were looking out for me and that Republicans are for big business, but I not so certain of this anymore?! I think all those years of watching the other news stations programmed my mind in that regard.

Is that why he had 250 people of the cloth with him this past weekend? And from all religions?!

Didn't

Bill O'Reilly sexually harassed some woman at his network.

Oh yeah and then he was caught checking out a playboy on the plane ride back from his speach at a woman's conference. I believe children were sitting near him on that flight. Yah he's one hell of a guy.

Also Glenn Beck calling our president a racist and then speaking about MLK's ideals. C'mon why do people look to these people for reasoning. Turn off the TV and ignore these Hippocrites who think they have all the answers.

the above woman's take on things comes off much more educated, informed and spot on to me than Beck, I have stomached him a few times and laughed. outlandish!
HOwever, I do not defend obama nor the democrats, there is blame to go around, but I certainly wouldnt side with the rt wing or fox folks if I had to pick betwixt repubs and dems. I was very disappointed in this admins handling of the bp crisis, of course the prior admin set up the circumstances that allowed it but obama admin didnt do anything to change it and just faciliated the bad circumstances. I can find the article about if interested later.

I am super ticked about the redistribution of wealth that has been happening the last 30 years, particularly intense the last 10, I do not like socialism for the rich, trust me! the bank and ins. bail out is scandalous and I love michael lewis' writing about the mortgage industry scam fascinating and enraging:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/03/12/the-big-short-by-michael_n_496978.html

really though, more than the above folks, amy goodman is a real person for the people amongst reporters

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amy_Goodman

John Dean, a republican, wrote an excellent book about the unfortunate change in the party: "conservatives without conscience". I would have to say that barry goldwater might have been more credible than bill clinton and more progressive even perhaps, although I certainly havent done a dissertation by any means on all of it! Ike was pretty cool when he warned about the "military industrial complex" I think cfs folks are a casualty in ways of all of that.
