Another study revealing links between the gut and the brain. If ME is messing up neural functions, it could interfere with links such as this one, blocking production of protective mucus. Also, it shows that the microbiome is important for this function, so disturbances of the microbiome could produce an abnormal response from the brain.

If they can identify the nerves involved with this, they might be able to target treatments properly, rather than just throwing all potential treatments at all patients.
