They found (by studying insects) that organisms have 'pain brakes' in the spinal cord. Injuries outside of the cord can permanently unlock those brakes, which probably increased survival by making the organism more sensitive to stimuli.

This is a preliminary study in insects, so don't expect a treatment for humans any time soon, but it certainly looks like a useful discovery.

PWME are probably suffering inflammatory pain, which probably has a different mechanism, but maybe this discovery will lead to a better understanding there too.
