Oh man, head is spinning with my families results

So I had my results analyzed and am now seeing an ND that specializes in MTHFR issues because I have FM, CF issues.

I just had my husband and kids done, and it's looking like he's (husband) is much more of a mess than me, but he apparently hides it well lol.

My head is spinning from all of this and I would like some input on where to start. I can't afford all of us going to the ND right now until I get under control, but I would like to see if I can help some of their issues, mainly with emotions and behavior.

So thoughts? I haven't done a full methyl profile, just genetic genie so far. Do I need to get the bigger methyl profile done for any of them?? Anything stick out? What/who should I focus attention on first?

Lots of people on this forum get their genotype tested, but it seems that few actually find any useful info, in terms of info that leads to improvements in their ME/CFS.

@summer94 ,

Sorry no one has answered you so far. I was just cleaning out my email and saw this. You didn't mention whether you had a blended family, but I wonder. It would be really unusual for your husband to be MAO -/- and two of your sons to be +/+. Not impossible, but rare.

Emotions and behavior are often linked to the MTHFR A1298C mutation, and everyone is +/- there. Methylfolate helps the reaction go in the right direction. Many people here prefer Solgar brand. Some start slow, some start with 1000 mcg (1 mg). My opinion is that if you can only do one thing, this should be it.

Some people on this forum worry about too much methylfolate and not having it get to the methyl cycle. Given these SNPs, that everyone has at least on MTRR A66G that is -, I wouldn't worry. But it's not a bad idea to think about B12 as a second supplement. There are two ways to go on this: an active B complex or a B12 supplement. And you have another choice, hydroxycobalamin (HyB12) or methylcobalamin (MB12). Because everyone is either MAO +/+ or has COMT +'s in various combinations, without the MTRR A66G being +/+, I think I would choose the hydroxy form in the B complex, if you can find it. I don't have a brand recommendation for you, sorry.

I think that should be enough to get you started, from my limited understanding, and would have the best chance of helping everyone in the family with low cost and acceptable risk.

Thank you Critterina, that was helpful.

I have all of them on methylated b complex now and I take hydroxob12, so I will add that in for them as well. We are not a blended family, I am MAOA ++ though. I thought it was weird seeing the boys both be ++ as well. I figured this was a case of random mutation. (see my results below)

I have started my oldest teen son on the L-Theanine Calm-Plex with GABA and 5-HTP and have noticed a difference in his calmness, he's not near as annoying. It's so noticeable, I can tell when he's lied to me about taking it because he doesn't think it does anything. Even my other son can tell when he hasn't taken it! lol

So that's where we are now. Once school starts I'll be able to see how behavior is affected better outside of home for my oldest. My two youngest are actually homeschooled, but my 13 year old has major anxiety with some school things, so I'm going to push him and see if he handle things better with the new supplements. My oldest (15), I'll just have to see how his grades are and such.

Oh, here's my panel...

@summer94 ,

Glad I could help. I am so surprised, like you, about the boys being MAOA +/+, but I guess it's possible. I was reading about another gene that both strands can be inherited from one parent, so either it was something like that, or spontaneous, as you say. I'm also really glad that your oldest is responding to the other supplements. I wish them all the best for this school year, and you too.

@Critterina and @summer94, the MAO mystery is due to the way it's being reported. Technically, males only have one copy of MAO, while females have two.

Instead of reporting males as MAO+ = yellow, they report it as MAO +/+ = red. This is because for males, one copy is the same is a female having two copies.

The SNPs which can affect mental health are COMT in combination with VDR taq, MAO A and MTHFR A1298C.

I'm going to be posting a SNPs Interpretation Guide probably in the next few days, so be on the look out for that.
