Pace led to headlines such as “Got ME? Just get out and exercise, say scientists” and “Chronic fatigue syndrome sufferers ‘can overcome symptoms of ME with positive thinking and exercise’ ”. That trial cost the British taxpayer more than £5 million but a re-analysis co-authored by expert patients and top US scientists recently claimed that recovery results had been inflated. Far from CBT being a miracle cure with graded exercise, they concluded that it had “no benefits” for patients with CFS and might even be harmful.

The authors of the Pace trial, however, stand by their original conclusions. “Whichever way the data is viewed, patients get better results from CBT and GET — both confirmed as safe — than they do from pacing [themselves] or medical care alone,” Pace’s lead investigator Peter White wrote in The Guardian.

Michael Sharpe said:
"We had six opinions before we published our results in a prestigious scientific journal. What we are talking about now, is on blogs! The findings of the critics were tested by any experts and written by people who have a bone to pick. With what we mean by science, which has nothing to do. "

When I do a google translation of the same page, the quote comes out a little differently :)
"We had six opinions before we published our results in a respected specialist magazine, and what we are talking about now is on blogs!" The critics' findings were not reviewed by any reviewers and written by people who have to chop a chicken We have nothing to do with what we understand by science. "

"written by people who have to chop a chicken"
Thanks for making me giggle.:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

" We have nothing to do with what we understand by science. "
And I could add, they have nothing to do with what I understand by science either. At last something I agree with Michael Sharpe on.:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

thank you @Barry53 and google translate.

I know dodgy and amusing machine translations are nothing new, but this one has coughed out some freaking hilarious lines:

"The pace, however, agreed to hand over data do not."

"Some of the patients improved therapies, but still a little bold David Metro place North points out, not being able to close out the newsletter of frankincense and the rest of the power of suggestion."

:lol::lol::lol:

We are now led to believe that the Titanic may have left port with a fire raging in a bunker which so compromised the structure of the hull that the collision with the iceberg led to the unexpected catastrophic effects. How fortunate we are in someone's choice of metaphor.

Oh, and the Inquiry although mentioning the fire, may have covered up matters. There's a surprise.

I watched this, and the comparison with PACE struck me also. Found myself hoping it would not take more than a century for it to become fully exposed.

There was also the suggestion that because a coal strike had led to very limited fuel being taken on board, and because the only way to deal with the fires was to put the burning coals (that were not yet supposed to have been burning) back into the boilers, there would have been a reluctance to slow the ship down and waste fuel. The suggestion in the programme was that firemen's statements were not properly heard at the time, effectively dismissed to suit political and commercial interests. Rings more bells I would say!

"He was defended by George Lewith, professor of primary care at Southampton University, who was not involved in the original research. He said the field was in danger of becoming politicised. “I’ve worked in the area for ten years, and I’ve been appalled by what has happened. There’s a small group of people with fixed and opposing views, and they want to torture the data until it proves what they believe. I think there’s a great danger people will stop doing research because it’s so confrontational.”

yes sad news indeed - I wrote to him after one thing he wrote and he was kind enough to reply

Edit added 22.22 - in my email to Gerorge I told him I thought his views were misguided and I didnt hold back - I think he was gratious in reply to be honest.

I had a long talk with Prof Lewith at a conference once. He was adamant that PACE should not be criticised because "it would scare off other researchers".

Which of course is precisely why it should be criticised - the more BPS researchers we scare off from their so called research the better. Chalder and Crawley seem to be producing and endless and unstoppable stream of dangerous drivel.
