An extract from:
Of Mice and Men: A Summary of the First International XMRV Workshop.
by K. Kimberly McCleary with Steven H. Kleinman, BSc, MD, and Suzanne D. Vernon, PhD.
Dr. Hansons study tested samples obtained by David S. Bell from 20 CFS patients, 10 of whom reported having recovered but still demonstrated lower physical activity levels than the 10 healthy control subjects as measured by seven instruments employed by Dr. Bell. Of these 20 CFS patients, 11 (55%) were positive; 8 (80%) of the 10 patients currently meeting Fukuda criteria and 3 (30%) of the individuals who had recovered tested positive, compared to 1 (10%) of the 10 healthy controls. The gag sequences found by Dr. Hanson were more similar to those reported by Lo et al., than to the gag sequences for XMRV, although all are part of the same gammaretrovirus family. Her group is working to sequence the env sequence and the entire virus genome(s) now that they have external funding support from NIH.

(We detected XMRV in respiratory secretions of immunocompetent patients with and without RTI at a frequency of ?3.2%, which is in good concordance with the recently reported prevalence in the general population of up to 4%)

The Prevalence of XMRV in Healthy Blood Donors in Japan
XMRV reportedly found in 1.7% of random healthy blood donor samples from the blood supply in Japan, testing for antibodies only. (This was a study of blood bank samples and prostate cancer patients, not ME patients.)
"Although our study had a limited sample size, the prevalence among blood donors as determined by identifying XMRV-specific antibodies was found to be 1.7%, while that among prostate cancer patients was found to be 6.3%"

"Given the evidence of inter-tropic recombination in MuLV, detection and classification of recombination in XMRV using different MuLV tropism prototypes should be interpreted with caution ... These results suggest that identification of parental strains of the potential recombinants is difficult and that recombination in the highly genetically related MuLV have been occurring for some time."

Conclusion:
"Given the evidence of inter-tropic recombination in MuLV, detection and classification of recombination in XMRV using different MuLV tropism prototypes should be interpreted with caution ... These results suggest that identification of parental strains of the potential recombinants is difficult and that recombination in the highly genetically related MuLV have been occurring for some time."

This is a very broad provisional patent, I can't tell from the listing whether a permanent patent has been granted, this may still be provisional (although that usually only lasts for one year so they must be extending somehow). The WPI has patented all their original XMRV assays and even patented treatment of XMRV with any antivirals.

I was wondering what are the two 'big' studies that folks keep talking about that aren't finished yet? One I guess is due at the end of the year, and then the other in 2012?

The BWG (Blood Working Group) study, results expected this summer.
The Lipkin study, results expected by the end of 2011.

So both should appear this year, though I wouldn't be surprised they are delayed. Such things happen a lot.

I added a large number of studies yesterday, added some categories, renamed some categories, and updated the PDF file.

If anyone spots anything obvious that is missing from the list, then I'd be really grateful for any feedback.

It might be nice to have a clean thread, pdf or whatever, that outlines all the flawed logic, arguments, and unanswered questions around XMRV? All in plain english? Bob's effort at an unbiased view anyways...

I know you addressed many of those recently on various threads, but they kind of got buried in a very long thread towards the end. Everybody has such a lowsy memory it could also serve as a good reference.

Just a thought. It might be asking too much considering all you have done already.

And then when you are done with all that! A magazine, journal,TV station would be nice...

Hmm.... well, yes, you're right, I did ask for suggestions! :eek:

I have been thinking about writing a blog/discussion about all the aspects of XMRV contamination, and this list was compiled in part to help me with that.

I don't know if it will ever get done, because I've got to prioritise my list of things to do, but in the mean time, I suppose I could collate all of my recent posts re contamination, and post them in new blog or a new thread, in case helpful...

That could be a good idea. Thanks for the suggestions mark!

How would you determine which arguments are flawed? There is conflicting evidence, which I think muddies the water for determining which logic or arguments are flawed. Maybe better to outline the conflicting arguments without passing judgment as to which are flawed.
