L-theanine decreases the contents of serum D-lactic acid and diamine oxidase in weaned piglets.

L-theanine increases the expression of tight junction protein in jejunum and ileum of weaned piglets.

L-theanine reduces the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines in jejunal mucosa and ileal mucosa of weaned piglets.

L-theanine improves intestinal barrier function by inhibiting TLR4/p38 MAPK/NF-κB signaling pathway.

so does L-glutamine apparently but I am a little scared to take it because I heard of this thing excitotoxicity, I read an article by LifeExtension that suggests its not likely to be an issue but I don't know enough to say whether thats true.

This abstract indicates that it reduces excitation due to stress. L-theanine has a very calming effect. There are other studies listed underneath this one.
