Historical ME Research Literature and related information

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The main purpose of this wiki is to collate literature related to the historical definitions of 'ME' and outbreaks of 'ME'.
We have focused on literature before 1990, which is a couple of years after the CDC invented the 'CFS' criteria.
We think the list is quite comprehensive, but there may be missing literature.

The research literature is listed in three categories: by 1) Date, 2) Author, and 3) Outbreak Area.

We have also collated research that discusses the 63 documented historic outbreaks of ME.

Also added, is other interesting research literature and info relating to 'CFS' which has ramifications for historical 'ME'.

Also included, for comparison, is some relevant and interesting research and information relating to 'CFS' definitions.

In 1970 two psychiatrists, McEvedy and Beard, attempted to put the 1955 epidemic down to mass hysteria. Yet, at that time the UK had several true ME clinicians and advocates who all wrote scathing letters to the BMJ in response to McEvedy and Beards claims.

Bob.. I didnt see them there (thou its possible I missed them) but I do think it would be a great idea if the links to the pages from the CDC, which make it clear they they also consider ME and CFS to be different illnesses are there on this ME page somewhere too. Maybe ISO knows exactly were to find that CDC info is?? (I cant remember where they are on that site).

Wow.. great job going on there Bob. Im amazed at just how much you have done on it so far. Dont wear yourself out too much.

Thanks tania :D

I think i've done the easy bits so far.

The difficult bits will be finding the more obscure papers, collating it all when it gets bigger, and then thinking about whether I should add any notes to each paper/link.

Thanks tania, yes, that's a great idea... If anyone knows where that info is to be found, could they let me know please.

Hi Bob,

Just left you a note on the thread, because I did not think the discussion area here was being used.

Great work. Thank you for the effort you have put in so far.

I hope to add a few articles and items, but need to check that it would not amount to a double up, as well as checking links etc.

Here are the CDCs statements etc -

Amy Blum, Medical Classification Specialist at the National Center for Health Statistics ( a division of the CDC) who reported in July 2009:

ME is not considered a synonymous term for chronic fatigue syndrome in the United States.

This was taken from correspondence between Lesley Ben and Amy Blum and referred to by Lesley Ben, in an article she wrote on ICDs posted at HFME See: http://www.hfme.org/wlicdcodes.htm.

And this from the CDC website on CFS:

The name myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) was coined in the 1950s to clarify well-documented outbreaks of disease; however, ME is accompanied by neurologic and muscular signs and has a case definition distinct from that of CFS.

See: http://www.cdc.gov/cfs/education/wb3151/chapter1-1.html

Thanks insearchof. I'm just putting links, authors & titles on the wiki at the moment, not quotes, so I'll put those links on there. Thanku.
I think if i start including quotes, the project will become to complex. (But suggestions are welcome.)
If you have any other links then please feel free to post them here, and I can easily fit them into the wiki.

Hi Campbell,

Thanks very much for those items.

I've added all of your items, under the 'New Zealand Outbreak'

I haven't got links for all of them, so if anyone is aware of any extra links, please could you let me know.

Thank you.

I tried to upload to research papers here but the PDF was too large 3.8 meg vs 2.8. I tried to shrink it but after a few hours gave up.

Thanks Doogle. But I think you're getting the two forums confused?! I'm not a member of the other forum, so I can't access the document.

I understand, but some people are members of both so I thought the link might be of use to those that are. I would have added the link myself but I didn't see where others can edit this article. If you want to PM me an address I can send you the article.
