Just got back from the doc today. She said my uric acid level was through the roof, and that's why I'm in pain all over, and running fevers lately.

And my Hashimoto's is alot worse again, so she is upping my thyroid med. I have been super tired lately again.

I can't believe I have gout at my age. I'm only forty one. My grandfather and my mother had gout. But it just always seemed like a disease of older people to me.

The doc had no answers for my neurological stuff, as usual. And we didn't really discuss much else. Basically, here's your pills, here's your gout diet sheet, bon voyage.

But at least it does explain some of why I'm in pain all over and fevering and more fatigued than usual.

I'm glad you found an answer at least. I hope meds. can help.

I have a BAD problem with kidney stones. I even surprise my urologist... Mot much can be done and th Lithotripsy treatments over and over are not good for the body. I never ass them, they GROW!

Let us know how you are doing...

Hi Carrigon

Your doctor could be right. Your doctor could also be jumping to silly conclusions. You need a complete gout workup from an endocrinologist. I have had very high levels of gout since the early 80s, I was in my twenties. All my CFS symptoms were put down to gout, I was given anti-gout medication, but nothing worked. No wonder, they got it wrong. When I went to an expert on gout, he assayed my input and output of purines. They balanced. My high uric acid is a homeostatic mechanism, most likely. Uric acid is a powerful antioxidant, I have an oxidative stress disorder, its easy to see a link (though hard to prove). Also, gout symptoms are linked to formation of uric acid crystals. These can be located, and sometimes biopsied. If you have uric acid crystals forming in tissue and joints, then you have gout. No crystals, no gout, just high uric acid.

Bye

hi carrigon, if you can i'd advise getting a second opinion from another doctor. High uric acid levels are found in over one hundred medical conditions, so it's quite likely that it has nothing to do with Gout, If you havn't already you should be being sent to a neurologist to get your neurolical issues investigated. Is this doctor an Endochrinologist? cause you need one if you have Hashimoto's thats not under control. Hope this helps and hope you can get a better doctor all the best

It's gout, I've had the toe attacks. And it runs in my family.

I've already been to an endo, he was a quack from hell. He said Hashimotos is just inflammation and to take NSAIDs for it. I would never go back to a quack like that again.

Hi Alex,
Was it Dr D that told u uric acid works like an anti-oxidant, he also said that inosine raises uric acid and works like that as i had tried inosine in replacement of imunovir but only found it helped my creeky joints, this is when he told me about uric acids antioxidant abilities.

cheers!!!

hi carrigon, "quack fom hell" and then some buy the sounds of things, causes that's just nuts! maybe theres a real endo in your area you could go to. From what i've read about gout there's other tests that need to be done to confirm diagnosis because other things can have the same symptoms here's a link if you want to have a look http://www.emedicinehealth.com/gout/page5_em.htm Sounds like your having alot of trouble with doctor's, been through that myself i,ve found letting doctors know that i know what my patients rights are and that i'm prepared to put in complaints, leads to a sudden change in attitude! i'm in New Zealand, i see your in USA don't know to much about your rights there, but i found this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Patients'_Bill_of_Rights it says you have the right to see a speacialist. So your doctor has to send you to them. hope things get better soon All the best !

Hi heapsreal, I don't know - I might have told him, its been so long. We both researched stuff and exchanged info regularly, even occasionally outside of his office hours (with another CFS advocate whose name I don't recall). I haven't talked with him for two and a half years now.

bye
Alex

I had gout right about the time I came down with CFS, but instead of an endo they sent me to a rheumatologist. Gave me cortisone and said by!! There is a new drug out for gout.

I have not had any trouble yet and I have not had blood work since starting Imunovir. I did read that elevated uric acid is the side effect. I take weekends off, that may help. I did read that a few people do get gout but they may take much more than I do.. I take 1 tablet twice a day and I have heard of people taking as high as 6. I can tell you this it is knocking those viruses back and it has only been 3 months. I have have over 250 left LOL I feel so much better but a long ways to go at least the terrible sick virus reactivation has stopped or close to it.

Gout is one of the types of arthritis that is different than the rest, and needs to be treated differently so that you can have the ability to treat it as it should be. It is important to understand what gout is before trying to understand the symptoms of this unique form of arthritis. The basic gout symptoms revolve around a sudden attack.

I didn't see anything about in this thread, so I thought I would just put it out there. Out here in no mans land I have met several people with Gout, and they all swear by Black Cherry Juice. I hear some brands are better than others, and someone said Concentrate is better. I see it widely touted on internet sites. I have never seen anyone speculate on why it works, but I know these people get visibly ill without it.

I started exploring it since a Dr. wanted me to use Inosine, and it made seriously ill. I can tolerate small amounts of Inosine, but the 1500mg a day the Dr. suggested knocks my dingus in the dirt.
