I don't know what "living apart together" means

Regarding themselves as being a couple, in a relationship, but maintaining separate households. I think it is more common in middle aged couples who are already economically independent and choosing to keep that while being committed to each other in other respects.
Also seems to be common in independent older couples, who want a part-time partner also but want to keep their own home/lifestyle.

Seems particularly common in widows/widowers, who may be looking for companionship, but not a replacement for their deceased partner.
