The discovery is about the stem cells that form blood. At around age 70, somatic accumulations of mutations in those cells result in only a few of these cells producing most of the blood cells, whereas they are produced by tens or hundreds of thousands of different stem cells in younger people. Maybe ME involves a similar change in the stem cells that create immune cells.
