I wonder if they're able to claim a tax write-off or taking a loss when the for-profit hospitals with obscene prices then "mark down" their prices to provide care for the un(der)-insured. "Look, it's charity! We feel that our $100 procedure is worth $1000, therefore we're donating/losing $900 worth when we reduce their bill to the normal amount!"
