Wow! Starting at 4:48 on Prusty's video, he explains why people with ME/CFS don't get the flu! The flu is a fast-growing virus and our cells (ME/CFS patients) lack the nutrients necessary for the virus to grow! I wonder if this is applicable to COVID-19? We may have a natural immunity of sorts - too sick to get sicker!

I also found his comments on the flu very interesting, as I have not had the flu in 20+ years and I do not get the annual flu shot.

He mentions...phosphorine viruses....(is that what he is saying?).....those are the type which apparently don't establish well due to our messed up serum.....

So is Corona a type of phosphorine virus...seems to be the next question. (for corona obsessing)

@Mary yes it’s fascinating! Explains why I don’t get sick for sure! Weren’t we talking about this in another post? Now my question is are the people who get sick all the time suffering with a differnt variation of ME/ virus or are they confusing their “sickness behaviour” for catching something.
@xebex - you might have been talking about this in a different post and I missed it, which is very likely! I just watched the video a little while ago and have not been following this whole thread.

I think people who get sick all the time - like me, a majority of the time I have a low-grade sinus something or other - could still have ME. Prusty talks about how people with ME don't have the nutrients in their cells to support fast- growing viruses like the flu. I last had the flu 20 years ago. So I'm guessing there are slow-growing viruses and also bacteria that may be able thrive on our poor depleted cells. I know I have ME/CFS - PEM like clockwork for over 20 years.

He's saying fast-growing viruses like the flu. I turned on the closed-captioning, not perfect but it helped! I recommend it. So seriously, it might be difficult for COVID-19 to gain a foothold in our bodies . . . maybe . . .

@Mary ah yes that makes sense! I wasn’t suggesting they/you didn’t have ME just that it could be that maybe some people are mistaking their PEM for a cold. Ie it’s not a cold/virus it’s actually the symptoms of the PEM. When I get PEM I get flu like symptoms but I know it’s not flu because it can disappear as fast as it comes on. All speculation. But you’re right, maybe one subset has a continually active virus hiding in depleted cells and in another the viruses only activate after exertion.

somehow I don't see how we confuse ME with- colds and flus. I seem to have no issue with- knowing the difference.

my sore throat symptom- that one- I take the chinese don't get that cold pill...and you take them ASAP when you suspect- a virus. So I do- sometimes mistake the ME sore throat for- early cold symptom....and take those pills...only to realize its just my throat-( which feels like strep if i talk much).

I never confuse the two either. My PEM is a bone-deep exhaustion that requires absolute rest to recover from. It feels like nothing else in the world. I often get sick along with or right after PEM, but I don't confuse that with PEM.

so your colds/sore throats/viruses can come on completely unrelated to over doing an activity?

For many years I "knew" I was catching every possible cold and flu virus around, I was certain. Even when I would take very high doses of concentrated herbal immune boosters, I would still get sick. I would also take immune boosters to help me get rid of all the colds and flu's I was getting.

What the immune boosters were doing I think. Were amplifying my already up-regulated immune system, making my flu-like symptoms worse and making them last longer.

What I've learned since, is that what I was getting were actually flu-like flares from ME/CFS, from the sickness response but they felt identical to colds and flu's! I still get these flu-like flares if I really over-do-it but they never last more than 24 hours. I've had maybe 5-6 in the last year or so.

The other thing was that it didn't matter what time of year it was, I got what I thought were colds and flu's, just as much in the summer as in the winter.

I get both flu-like flares, as I mentioned in my last post as well as PEM. The 2 are very different and I never confuse the 2. My PEM comes as fatigue, malaise and fibro pain with very mild if any flu-like symptoms.

My flu-like flares are identical to the flu. Like they have been for years but they never last more than 24 hours now, ever.

@ljimbo423 this is how i experience it too. i only get flu like symptoms after i've overdone it (usually from stressing my muscles) and sometimes it can feel like i'm hit with the flu and then an hour later its gone. the reason i'm asking these questions is because i think its important that this phenomenon is explored and could be a big key into how the immune system is working/not working it could also mean there are two main subtypes and then other subtypes within those two. It seems to me that prusty has found one subtype.

My throat- is Ok each morning and flared and in pain by the time its afternoon.

Then if I were to have- chatted, or phoned or maybe had somebody here...the painful sore throat starts midday.

Its part of my daily cycle symptoms....

If I then crash- I simply have a WORSE version of this dry hoarse throat. I have a dried out condition in my sinuses and throat.

Just don't have fever and chills. That yucky awful coming down with the flu feeling is probably the best descriptor of ME...plus then add on the PEM...

I get alot of other symptoms that exacerbate when I'm fighting off some other virus or flu. They are awful (went to the ER with)....like my tongue is so swollen it doesn't fit inside my mouth. Thats always fun.

Thanks @RL_sparky for posting that. I was not expecting that video so quickly. BTW I got a mail from Prusty, he clarified that the first paper is well on its way and he is working 18 hrs a day in the lab. There is a scare that they may close the lab due to corona virus scare. So he is trying to finish the paper at the earliest. He has only a PG student and UG student as assistants. His two Ph.D students have completed their course and taken up jobs. So he has to do most of the work himself. So lets wait. Have trust in him. He will not let us down. Let me view the video posted.

Please if you can, convey that we Wish Dr. Prusty to take good care of himself......and get adequate rest so he can- complete this important task!
Will convey to him your wishes and request him to take care. But is there any prophylaxis for this bloody corona virus ? Already all the masks available with medical shops and stockists in India are sold out !
