TL;DR: Go to the TGA site and comment on the TGA proposal to ban sports supplements.

The consultation paper is available here:

https://www.tga.gov.au/consultation...tain-sports-supplements-are-therapeutic-goods

You can comment on an online form.

Background

Efforts in the USA to restrict supplements seems to have regrouped in Australia.

Australia's TGA (our version of the FDA) is proposing to regulate sports supplements.

The proposal is not clear. If taken literally, it could mean anything that makes a therapeutic claim - a line drawing of muscles on packaging was enough in one example they gave.

Although it might be only sports supplements for now, the usual approach in Australia at least is to ban something small (but poorly defined) to see if they can get it through.

The proposed legislation shows that anything could be caught up if it has any sort of claim attached. Most vitamins could fall under this:

Therapeutic Goods:
goods for oral administration that are represented (expressly or by implication) as being for the improvement or maintenance of physical or mental performance in sport, exercise or any other recreational activity, and which
(a)
contain poisons, or other listed things] ...; OR
or
(b) are manufactured in the dosage form of a tablet, capsule or pill

when the goods are used, advertised, or presented for supply:
(a) for therapeutic use; or
(b) in a way that is likely to be taken to be for therapeutic use;
including, but not limited to, one or more of the following therapeutic uses:
(c) gaining muscle;
(d) increasing mental focus;
(e) increasing metabolism;
(f) increasing stamina;
(g) increasing testosterone levels, reducing oestrogen levels or otherwise modifying hormone levels;
(h) losing weight or fat;
(i) preparing for workout;
(j) recovering from workout

Yes, the bureaucrats have wanted an excuse to regulate vitamins and supplements for a very long time. This is the latest attempt.

It might be worth writing to your local MP to notify them as it doesn't appear that this has the explicit approval of the Minister or Parliament.
