Am I taking too much MB12 & MFolate?

Hi all,

I think my dosages may be too high. I'm taking 4mg of methylfolate and 1mg of Mb12 and 1mg of hydroxy b12 per day. That's milligrams not mcgs. Is that considered high?

I've been having severe issues with histamine since starting this protocol but it significantly increased my stamina and eased brain fog. I think I have to back off of it though due to the histamine issues as I had an anaphlyatic shock episode this week. Thank God for Benadryl!

My 2cents...
It's difficult to say if a dosage is high or low per se... it depends on where you are now with your symptoms and tolerance of those supplements.

1mg B12 may be considered a moderately high dose but there's people around here that take 10x that dose or more. 4mg of methylfolate is probably a high dose. I for one wouldn't be able to handle it :)

If you think the anaphylactic episode is linked to methylfolate or B12 you should talk with your physician and definitely lower the supplements to a safer dosage, especially methylfolate.

Hi Audrey, in addition to my PM, if I were going to reduce any dose, I would be tempted to reduce the hydroxyB12, slowly at first, I can see why you are on it due to COMT status, but personally hydroxy - has only given me problems (but I'm COMT -/-). But this would largely depend on your personal response. If you found that the hydroxy helped reduce your symptoms of agitation/overmethylation when you started, then I would keep it the same. I think you are going to have to experiment with finding your perfect combo, in addition to efforts increase histamine metabolism, & decrease histamine production... xoxo S

I'm COMT-/- and have problems with hydroxyb12 also. What problems do you have with hydroxyb12?

@Indie Hi there! It was some time ago that I was experimenting with hydroxy, but I seem to recall that it just increased the fatigue. At first it seemed to help, but that was short-lived. As well, it seemed to make it harder to stabilize on my methylfolate. If you are COMT-/- then likely you need methyl, and hydroxy - is the unmethylated form of B12. I have had much more success with methy B12, but had to start with microscopic doses... All the best, S
