Would Valcyte work for PWME's who don't have CMV?

Apparently, the officially recognized use of Valcyte is for treatment of CMV. I also read somewhere that Dr. Montoya's test subjects were required to have a certain level of CMV titers to participate in the study.

While, I certainly have pathogen problems, CMV isn't one of them. I'm dealing with EBV, HHV-6, mycoplasma, and HPV.

Would Valcyte be effective against these other pathogens? I only have a vague understanding that CMV, EBV, HHV-6 and HPV are all in the herpes virus family, but I have no idea if a drug that's effective against one would be effective against the others.

Thanks Heaps.

That attachment is excellent!

My "CFS Specialist" doctor recommends I first try Valtrex only--to see if that does the trick. After reading these boards, I have my doubts about whether Valtrex alone would do anything. Also Dr. Teitelbaum's says he no longer prescribes Valtrex to CFS patients because "HHV-6 is resistant to Valtrex" and he has found that it doesn't help his patients. (Not that I consider Dr. T to be the final word on anything.)

Bottom line, I need to do more research...

Valtrex is used to treat EBV. Valcyte is used to treat HHV6 and CMV. But if you do enough research on these boards, you'll find enough people who will swear that Valtrex (or it's less toxic cousin Famvir) cured their HHV6 (and EBV) infection. I'm starting low and slow (least toxic, least side effects) with Famvir to treat my EBV & HV6. Stick with what your "CFS Specialist" says, as long as it's the least toxic treatment First!. As a nurse, I would ALWAYS suggest least toxic, fewest side effects FIRST!! Makes sense to me (and of course, my opinion doesn't mean anything)

Are there any doctors with studies on famvir and me/cfs? I'd like to see the doses (at 110 lb). The general info I see on other sites is not for long term.

Dr Lerner has used famvir, his dosages are very high, i think 500mg 3 times a day and i have also seen 4000mg spread throughout the day he has prescribed. i got good results with much lower doses, 250mg twice a day, this dose was mainly used for economic reasons as it gets to expensive with higher doses. I did try 500mg twice a day for awhile and didnt see any more improvement/effects from this. Lerner uses it for ebv but others like myself have found it helpful for other viruses like cmv and others hhv6. If u have other infections you will need to treat them too. As for dosage and body weight, im twice your size, if that helps.

cheers!!!

supposedly works against ebv, cmv and hhv6 but some find valcyte doesnt help ebv that much so need to add valtrex. Famvir seems to fall between the 2 antivirals mentioned.

Hi Heaps,

That's a great googledoc. I tried to copy and paste it on to my facebook page to share with one or two people but it doesn't seem to work. Do you know why this may be? Am I perhaps not supposed to? Many thanks
