I thought this story was interesting because of all the talk on the forum about gut bacteria...
Uhm, maybe it was the cold, hard winter that weakened the animals' immunity.
Another possibility is that common bacteria were infected by phage viruses which caused them to produce toxins or become invasive. Phages often cause genomic rearrangements in infected bacteria.
