It would probably depend on the case. In a case like @Gingergrrl, there titers are no longer suggestive of active infections, and so antivirals probably wouldn't (and in her case didn't) help (anymore).

In my case, I took a solid dose of Famvir for eight months (in 2014) while my EBV, HSV-1, and VZV IgM titers were high and it did nothing. It did not lower the titers and it did not bring any symptom improvement. Although it made sense at the time and I have no regrets trying it. After Famvir, I tried Valcyte but was not able to tolerate it and it gave me akathisia and other horrible side effects even as low as 1/64th of a pill and had to stop it.

We really do not know what my antibody titers are now b/c of IVIG but if the EBV PCR should become positive in the future, my doctor would probably want me back on Famvir. It would not be for symptom relief vs. to keep the virus from replicating in order to prevent a recurrence of Mono and b/c EBV can worsen autoimmunity and even lead to some cancers. But at last test, the EBV PCR was negative.
