POULSBO — The state Department of Health has placed Poulsbo physician Susan J. Shlifer on probation for at least five years, following an investigation into complaints from patients who saw her between 1998 and 2010.

The board that oversees health care licensing for the state found Shlifer provided “a general pattern of substandard care,” and used risky alternative treatments on patients, the DOH announced Friday.

Under an agreement Shlifer reached in February with the Department of Health’s Medical Quality Assurance Commission, she can continue in her family practice at Sound Health and Wellness Center, Inc., but with restrictions and oversight.

The commission charged Shlifer diagnosed patients as having chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia with insufficient physical examination or tests. She then sometimes prescribed “cookie-cutter treatment methods” that were unproven and not effective. Those included the Marshall Protocol, a therapy for treating chronic inflammatory disease developed by Trevor Marshall of Thousand Oaks, Calif., a non-physician with a Ph.D in biomedical engineering....

Thanks for posting this Ember.

I know six people who were former patients of Dr. Shlifer back around 2005-2006 or so. None of them were part of this lawsuit/trial, but probably could have reported similar bizarre behavior by the doctor that was presented by the fourteen complainants in the original state documents about a year ago. It seems like she became incredibly obsessed with the Marshall protocol, and had people wearing long sleeve coats, and hats and sunglasses inside...and put (almost) everyone on the MP without doing sufficient testing. Glad to hear her license wasn't taken away, but nice to know she's on probation so that this reckless and unprofessional behavior doesn't happen again.

The friends who tried the MP w/her all had to stop for various reasons, but all of them very serious. Two almost died, one of them so close to complete kidney failure that they didn't think she'd survive even if they stopped the protocol.
