Tanya is a young woman from Adelaide, whose life is in danger. She urgently needs to raise funds. Please visit her site and spread the word widely. (For clarification, Tanya is not a member of this forum.)

In her own words:
"My name is Tanya and I have been confined to a hospital bed now for most of the last 27 years as a result of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ Myalgic Encephalomyelitis and Crohn's disease. I am unable to walk or stand and I haven’t been able to eat normal food for most of that time, over the last 8 years relying totally
on a hospital-grade manufactured nutrition, called Vital HN. Taken by mouth, it has has kept me alive.

Towards the end of last year I received devastating news from the pharmaceutical company that they had stopped making that formula. I am now in a desperate situation where I have only 4 weeks supply of Vital HN left, and several attempts made so far with the help of my dietician have not yet resulted in a successful replacement. Every formula I've tried has triggered
a bad flare of intestinal pain.

My disability pension cannot cover my day-to-day living costs as enteral nutrition costs a small fortune, and so will the ongoing process as I continue to try to find a replacement.

I am seeking to raise an amount of $20,000 to help me fund the search for a nutrition replacement to keep myself alive and for dietician and medical specialist expenses. I also need to pursue further tests and treatments that I have not been able to as I have no funds for them. I hear of new treatments all the time that other people with my illnesses are having good results from. I hear of supplements that could ease some of my symptoms but I'm prevented from partaking of these things because I simply can't afford them.

You can't just put a bed-ridden human being in a small room with a bunch of medications and expect them to thrive. Or even want to live. Life is more than that. Please help raise funds to help me move forward, in the hope that I can start to overcome some of the effects of my serious illnesses."

This is the sort of situation the Australian health system should cope with - it shouldn't happen here.

Can I suggest you send this notice to a local journalist to draw attention to Tanya's plight (email then follow up with a phone call)? The community newspapers are usually best for that.

I see from Tanya's page that she has tried asking departments for help, but sometimes it can help to approach politicians in an election time, including the minister for health and the independent senator.

Thank you for these suggestions. She is planning on approaching the local media. Would anyone here happen to know of sympathetic journalists in Adelaide?
