I don't understand why they use the word 'catastrophizing' when what they seem to mean is focusing attention on the pain..

Yeah, I don't get this either. "Catastrophizing" is anticipating some event with potentially bad consequences and then obsessing about worst case scenarios.

"Pain catastrophizing," is apparently some kind of "term of art" with a different meaning, like amplifying your current pain by focusing all of your attention on it.
