NSAID/Antidepressant Combo Linked With Risk of Intracranial Bleeding

Combining antidepressants with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may increase the risk of intracranial bleeding, according to a population-based cohort study in the BMJ.

Researchers looked at the incidence of intracranial hemorrhage in more than 4.1 million patients in South Korea started on antidepressants between 2010 and 2013. Half the patients took both antidepressants and NSAIDs, and half took antidepressants alone.

During the first 30 days of treatment, the risk of intracranial bleeding was higher for patients who combined antidepressants with NSAIDs than for patients who only took antidepressants, researchers found.

No differences in bleeding risk existed among the various antidepressant drug classes. However, men who combined the drugs were at greater risk of intracranial bleeding than women, according to study results.
