Family-fueled medical research makes for great movies, but does it really work?

[A quick summary (probably better described as what I drew from it):
often families want research findings very quickly (as their child is dying) and so often these children are not helped.
But their push for research often helps, both from the research funded, and the awareness it causes for the problem (which can, amongst other things, lead to more research as well as the initial research prompting other studies)].
