Hi. This is my first post here. I am certain I have MTHFR and will be testing for it hopefully soon. I have been sick for 17 years with Lyme, clotting disorder, candida, Epstein-Barr, gluten intolerance, reflux, adrenal fatigue, infertility with possible miscarriages, probable heavy metal issues, hormonal issues, etc. Over the years I have seen countless doctors and have tried countless things and nothing has ever helped. I always knew there was some missing link, something that I was missing that was keeping me from getting well. A month ago a friend told me about MTHFR and after reading about it, I knew it was the mp missing piece to my puzzle. I have so many symptoms of it, as do/did so many people on my mom's side. I have checked out the practitioner lists on MTHFR.net, mthfrsupport and the MTHFR Facebook page, but there are only two listed for CA. One is near me, but really doesn't handle the other health issues I have and had mixed reviews. I've heard of a few since, but they too also had very mixed reviews or were very expensive. Can anyone recommend a naturopath in So. Calif.? so eager to get moving on this, as I have lost nearly two decades of my life to this and I have a lot of lost time to make up for. Thanks.

Hi farallon,

Welcome to the forum!

Dealing with MTHFR really means dealing with methylation as well, as, if you have a mutation in MTHFR you are pretty likely to have a methylation block. If you haven't read up on it, there is lots of info here. Dr. Neil Nathan has a great deal of experience with this, but I suspect he is in the Bay area. You can google to find him

Best wishes,

Thank you Sushi. He looks like an incredible doctor. I emailed him, on the slim chance he might be willing to treat long distance. Sigh. Why are all the goods docs seemingly in N. CA?

I posted this also in the MTHFR treatment section. Sushi was kind enough to tell me about Dr. Neil Nathan in N. Cal.,who sounds like an amazing doctor, but I have a feeling he won't treat long distance, or that he would, but you have to go see him once. That is not an option as I have vertigo, which makes traveling horrendous. I also take care of a sick parent with cancer.

I recently learned about MTHFR and am certain this is my core issue, as to why I got sick and have never gotten well. As I said I have Lyme, but also have EBV, candida, adrenal fatigue, a clotting disorder, HHV-6, and hormonal imbalances. I really need someone locally, or who would be willing to treat long distsnce vis Skype or something, like a lot of ND's are doing now, if they live at a distance. Thanks.

IEven if the doctor wont see you due to the distance..maybe he can direct you to a doctor specialising in MTHFR closer to home.

I suggest to find out first IF you do actually have MTHFR issues or not via testing (thou from some things you listed there it sounds quite likely that you may well do)... just talk to some of your local drs via phone (note ones who see a lot of pregnant ladies are more likely to know about MTHFR) and see if you can find out if they will get you tested if you make an appointment. (I nowdays often email doctors to ask about what they will do for me before I make an appointment to see them). MTHFR causes issues with abnormal clotting hence can highly increase chance of strokes (and as you would of read.. is a big cause of miscarriages).

Once you know if you have MTHFR or not and the type, there is good info online at the MTHFR website and from there even without a doctor.. you can find out what you should be on and treat it yourself (as the things you need are not prescription things). I got screwed as the specialist who diagnosed my MTHFR didnt know how to treat it right and put me onto the wrong things for it which didnt work. It took 5 years until I found out throu the MTHFR site that his treatment for it was no good at all (hence why it hadnt helped me). and hence then sought out another specialist who was up to date and knew how to treat it properly. This new MTHFR treatment plan IS helping some of my ME symptoms quite a bit. So dont just trust any MTHFR specialist you go to...check they are giving right forms of treatment, they need to be up to date.

If u know you have this.. it may be just easier to treat it properly yourself.

Ive found that Ive had to go to different specialists to have specialist care in each thing I have (Ive gone to one specically for the MTHFR after I knew i had it via test)... unfortunately not many doctors out there do all things thou at times one gets lucky and finds a doctor which will help with several.

best luck

Thanks. My fortunately because I have so many intertwined issues going on, I was really hoping to find someone who could treat ISPs all. For example, my AF and hormones are completely out of control and I think I may be perimenopausal. I know the MTHFR can affect this so I really need someone also who is great with straightening out hormones. Also, I have Lyme. Many people say to treat the ,Thor first, so that the Lyme can detox properly. However Dr. Neil Nathan says to treat the Lyme first as treating the MTHFR first can make the MTHFR first. I don't know how this can be. I don't detox we'll and have never been able to get over any of my health issues because of it. I think if I started to treat the Lyme again before treating any potential kept her, I would just proceed as getting sicker again. It's so completely and utterly confusing.

Hey, ther is an infertility center in California, I struggle with all you mentioned but did not know I had a homo for the gene. It hey tested me and then prescribed folic acid, which is the worst thing to do! You could get the test and then treat it yourself (that's what I did). I have improved. Clinic is the beer clinic. They send you a kit for your blood, and you fedex it back. Doc gives you a call with results but the testing is1500-2000. Not cheap.

It must be said, at the time of the test , I had no idea that the mutation was also found in ME. I discovered it once I found this website and made the connection
