Nausea and Today's A&E experience

It's often just a benign inflammatory response or can be an autoimmune issue. Did they do blood tests for parietal cell and intrinsic factor antibodies too?

Nexium is also a powerful anti-inflammatory so could clear things up and is safe to use for the majority of people. Best practice is to do a pH manometry test to see if excess stomach acid is the problem but is seldom done by doctors, they just try you meds instead. Personally, I'd start with safer still option of a H2 blocker first, something like ranitidine and they also have anti-inflammatory properties.

Thank you for the information, I really appreciate.

No, they did not do blood tests for parietal cell and intrinsic factor antibodies. pH Manometry test was not mention at all. I really don't think they are as knowledgeable as you. I will be getting the Coeliac result soon, I'm definitely going to ask about these.

Great info, many thanks again. One last question @kangaSue, is it normal to have so much nausea for benign inflammation of stomach? I wake up with severe nausea at early hours in the mornings since. I have no appetite, absolutely none.

I have never been offered a pH manometry test, they just kept pushing extra antacid meds.

It is the case for me to have benign inflammation of the stomach. Even when my gastroparesis was at it's worst, they only found mild gastritis. Regular scopes about every six months prior to this found little to no inflammation at all.

The first sign I had that something wasn't quite right was that I lost all feelings of hunger and had no appetite at all. I only ate because I know I had to for nutrition. I only had nausea from eating mostly but I know of plenty of people with gastroparesis who are woken by severe nausea during the night or start out the day that way.

Domperidone is the most widely prescribed med for this, one tablet (or two in the worst cases) up to 4 days a time a day with the last one at bed time if nausea is a problem overnight.

Did your pneumonia start after having nausea or did nausea result after pneumonia started? Aspiration pneumonia can result from gastroparesis causing but if you had viral pneumonia, it's possible for that to result in in post-viral gastroparesis.

Pneumonia started with sore throat, fever, caugh, sweating episodes at nights but no stomach and nausea issues in the beginning. I remember I lost my appetite and then severe nausea later in the illness. It started with the antibiotic use. I used Avelock. Remember phoning to the dr and mentioning it. He stopped the Avelock for a day and then started next day, it was not as bad so I was told to continue.

After the first box of Avelock he listened my chest and it was not cleared. So another box of it for a week. But I was not nauseous then.

3 weeks after stopping the Avelock I went to a chest specialist and she said pneumonia was cleared, confirmed with an mr scan of torax.

I was OK by then but started to have major gastro issues like gas, indigestion etc but no nausea. Then I begin to develop reaction to dairy, had some vertigo too.

Then last week severe nausea and loss of appetite started. I'm now also having bouts of night sweats.

I'm now also having bouts of night sweats.
Look on the bright side, it might just be menopause ;)

I thought that was the case for me too when I started having night sweats but I later found out I have Autonomic Neuropathy also in having sudomotor and cardiovagal dysfunction. Chuck in the GI stuff and Orthostatic Hypotension and it's all to do with impaired vagus nerve function.

If I could persuade my GI motility doctor to get off her butt and do her job, I would get an upper scope done again so I could at least send some biopsy samples off to Dr Chia's lab to test for enterovirus, even though I don't have CFS, as I started out with having viral-like episodes of gastric upset that never developed to a full blown viral illness but progressively killed off my appetite and feelings of hunger.

I had a very early menopause 4 years ago. I had hot flashes and night sweats for a year and they stopped, they were completely different then the sweating I'm having now.

A new symptom last night 3 am severe diarrhea, 3 times. I was fine in the morning. Nausea is better today, energy levels are bad...

My endoscopy revealed the same: erythematous gastritis in the antrum of the stomach (as well as the small intestine and parts of the large intestine). I am not sure what to make of it yet but I am leaning towards (viral) infection.

The biopsy results said (post) infectous gastritis/duodenitis/left-sided colitis. Since it's been more than a decade now that this is the case I doubt it's POST infectious, but insteat INFECTIOUS. ;)

By the way I had a complete resolution of all symptoms while on antibiotics. But I doubt its because the antibiotic treated the infection, instead it's more likely that it happened because it "suppressed" the inflammation (most antibiotics have anti-inflammatory properties).

Once I went off antibiotics everything went back to how it was before (which means all symptoms came back).

@erin: you are not alone! I've been having severe nausea for the last three weeks. I also have an adrenal tumor they are monitoring so I'm not sure if it is that or if something else is going on. I'm glad you started this thread as it gives lots of info for when I see my Dr. Unfortunately, not til Thursday. I can barely eat anything. I keep forcing down little bits of gluten free crackers and ginger ale. I should buy stock in the ginger ale companies. They are refusing to do the follow up mri until August. The surgeon is not concerned about the nausea or pain in my side and abdomen. He said the tumor could be bleeding but he's not worried. Great. When do they worry? *sigh*

Sorry about your suffering @kelly8 I hope you get better soon.

I now finished the course of Nexium, given another medicine for gas before meals. But I was told not to use them If I'm not gassy. I use it on and off when I need it.

I continue with tranco buscas every night. This medicine helped me a lot. It is something like a GI diazepam. Unfortunately it can be addictive and I want to stop it gradually.

In summary I feel much better, no nausea, appetite back, still can only eat very small portions and very mild and bland food. I stopped loosing weight which makes me happy.

I wish you find the correct treatment and get better. Best of luck!

What kind of treatment did you use? Maybe you can't rememeber since it was such a long time ago. I hope you're feeling better now.

I wasn't able to treat it yet, since I (or shall I say the doctors) don't know what's the cause. I do however believe since bacterial infections are easier to detect in routine biopsies that it's viral, like Dr. chia also found out in a lot of his patients (infections of enteroviruses in the antrum of the stomach as well as, if I remember correctly, the duodenum).

What did remove all of my symptoms was an antibiotic (metronidazole), but only WHILE I was taking it. All symptoms came back when I stopped, therefore I believe it's because of the anti inflammatory effect of the antibiotic.

I'm gonna ask my Dr. for a blood test for antigens (IgG) this week for several viruses (Enteroviruses, Epstein Barr Virus, Cytomegalovirus and Herpes Simplex Viruses). I am also thinking about asking for another endoscopy and let the antrum (stomach) biopsy get tested for viral infection. I will post the results if I know more.

I had a look and there is information that links avelox to liver damage. What might not be consistent is that you got gastro issues weeks after stopping the medication.I was experiencing nausea, anorexia and malaise while taking the medication that I suspect damaged my liver and caused my CFS.
Here's what I found:a)Moxifloxacin liver toxicity warning issued The Pharmaceutical Journal 29 Jul 2008 b)yourlawyer.com/defective-drugs/avelox-liver-damage
If you deteriorate or you decide you want to look into your liver,I could send you quotes/references from medical journals regarding the unreliability of blood tests and the advantages of liver biopsy.Liver disease can also cause severe fatigue.
I hope that you continue to get better.Let me know if you would like additional information regarding the liver.
