I'd like to know whether anyone has tried Gastrodia, and what results they had. I've just ordered some.
The link below is a review of scientific evidence for some biological activities of Gastrodia, which is well known in TCM. (Incidentally, they don't mention its anti-viral properties.)
It's called Gastrodiae Rhizoma in the article, which is simply Latin for rhizome of Gastrodia.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3942998/
The scientific evidence sections are:
Anticonvulsion
Antioxidation
Treatment for Mental Disorder
Neuroprotection
Memory Improvement
Anti-cardio-cerebral
Anti-inflammation
and then a separate section on
Anti-depressant mechanisms
On the TCM websites, they always mention that it is used to treat "neurasthenia".

A major reason that neurasthenia has survived as a common diagnosis in Asian cultures is that it is considered an acceptable medical diagnosis that conveys distress without the stigma of a psychiatric diagnosis.
