Fisetin, a flavonoid antioxidant, is a Mast Cell inhibitor

Hi all,

I found out that Fisetin is helping me a lot with MCAS.
Fisetin is a flavonoid antioxidant and a strawberry Compound.

I have bought it for other purposes, but it helps me more with MCAS. When I take 1 capsule then I am free of symptoms for 2 days.

Fisetin has been found to reduce activation of mast cells:

Anyone else have experiences with Fisetin?

I've not used it (yet) but i have seen it mentioned in several articles.
You mention you do not experience any symptoms for 2 days after taking a single dose of fisetin, what kind of symptoms are you refering to?

I'm from NL as well, have you been diagnosed with MCAS by a Dutch physician?

Nice question. I have been interested in that stuff last autumn, my encouraged pharmacy couldn´t get any though. Would need to try via internet.

It´s found in onions, appels (these ones also contain quercetin, blocking NFkB) and grapefruit. I find indeed that these are nice, especially onions, but appels as well (over pears). I don´t dare to eat strawberrys as I am afraid of manganese, I could participate in a quiz show when i would eat something: "How much manganese contain these foods?"

I have searched for fisitin because it blocks inducible nitric oxide synthase. (Zheng et al 2008 - "Surpressive effects of flavanoid fisetin ...") They say it "remarkebly surpressis" ...

So, my experiences are limited, but with any higher amounts of drugs surpressing iNOS, even the as well endogenous acetate (vinegar), the nice effect disappears al to soon.

Very seldom I have mostly a very small asthma for a couple of days. Don´t know if it is connected to my other symptons that have arisen later on.

I tried fisetin. It didn't do anything noticeable for me, even at multiple capsules a day. Apigenin, which I bought in the same order, seemed to make a small but noticeable reduction in mental lethargy, but it stopped having a noticeable effect after a few months. I mention the apigenin mainly to show that I do notice effects from some nutraceuticals, but not fisetin.

That's quite dramatic for a small amount. Congratulations on hitting on something that works so well for you. (For me, it's Boswellia, but in much larger amounts.)

Do you take it with fats for absorption while avoiding dairy proteins, especially casein?

Boswellia helps my MCAS symptoms too, which brand / formula are you taking? I've tried many but only the one from NOW foods - boswellia extract 500mg in MCT gel caps works.

Quercetine, and especially the one from Thorne is of great help too. I find the liposomal products from Thorne to work better than any non-liposomal product from other brands.

I try to always get powders, else I tend to ration too much :) Mine was from BulkSupplements. I find myself raving about the tremendous benefit to breathing power. It also inhibits prostaglandins. Very difficult to mix, btw. I've just begun wondering if breathing the incense might do some good.

I just bought a double sized pouch from a different seller, it smells and tastes mostly the same. I haven't road tested it yet, so to speak.

Quercetin for me abolishes the niacin flush almost completely but has no benefit to lungs. Tart cherry for me inhibits prostaglandin release yet has no benefit to lungs.

What benefits do you find from Boswellia?

I take boswelllia to reduce pro-inflammatory prostaglandins which cause bronchoconstriction. I was prescribed montelukast for my chronic bronchitis and asthma, it worked great for my lungs, i could finally breathe better but it was giving me too many side effects. I then searched for a natural approach to reducing prostaglandins and found boswellia. I find the effect to be similar but without all the nasty side effects.

I take quercetin for my inflamed sinuses caused by MCAS / allergies, it works really well.

What i also find helpful for sinusitis and allergies is butterbur mixed with feverfew.

I didn't know about the tart cherry yet, do you notice an improvement in breathing from it?

So what i'm currently taking for MCAS and allergies is:
- Boswellia (prostaglandin inhibitor)
- Quercetin (mast cell stabilizer and h1 inhibiting properties)
- Fexofenadine (h1 inhibitor, the only antihistamine that doesnt make me drowsy)
- Ketotifen (mast cell stabilizer and h1 inhibitor, only sometimes and i need to build it up because it tends to make me feel very drowsy)
- Curcumin (liposomal, when needed)

It would be nice if we could make a list of supplements and non-conventional meds that help reduce symptoms from MCAS / allergies.

Edit: Breathing the incense if done properly might do some good, i know that it can be vaped!

Thanks for the detailed reply. A list would be good, especially if combined with any benefit (or not) for any particular symptoms. Imagine a database with Dx and symptoms so you can search for what helped those similar to you.

Tart cherry did not help with breathing at all. I had tried it first for joints.

Turmeric seemed to do nothing overall.

I never have sinus problems. I (probably) got close to dying once from a smooth muscle throat spasm from cutting the grass during high pollen of some sort.

Butterbur and feverfew? I'll recommend that to somebody I know who has bad allergies. Ty.

I was just speculating in another thread that it must be possible to somehow mix Boswellia with water(?) and inhale. How would vaping be done? You would need some kind of fillable cartridge? I'm looking just now and seeing instructions for DIY vaping that involve Propylene Glycol and Vegetable Glycerine.

(I also found many warnings that incense can worsen or even cause allergies.)

Ketotifen
Just FYI: but you probably already know that Theoharides has done a study showing quercetin and luteolin being separately superior to ketotifen.

Have you noticed any non-GI benefits to H2 blockers like famotidine? I just tried famotidine once recently and felt no benefit. (I don't have much, if any, GI problems from histamine but thought it could possibly help elsewhere.)

Hi fellow Dutchman :) ,

The following symptoms are away or much less:
  • No itching
  • No fast heart beat
  • No diarrhea
  • No brain fog and better concentration
  • Less inflammatory's
  • Better mood and less anxiety.
I am not diagnosed by a physician, just by own findings / research. Are you diagnosed by a physician?

Thanks! And yes, it is. I don't take it with fats for better absorption or avoid proteins.

I considered Boswellia before, I might try it in the future as well. Glad that Boswellia works for you.

No. no, for shure not.

I only wanted to give a wider frame if you would like to think on your mastcells. I don´t know much about, as well as Ive forgeotten anything about asthma as this was somehow not related to me/cfs but ... I have forgotten.

Turmeric gave me problems, but pure curcumin (extracted from turmeric) is very soothing, especially for my skin problems.

I'm not sure how vaping works exactly, something with an electrical appliance.

I've tried neuroprotek in the past but it increased the inflammation in my small intestine somehow. I'm thinking about trying it again.

With the H2 inhibitor cimetidine i had a bit better sleep and i felt more calm the next day. Cimetidine has some immunomodulating properties that might be beneficial for ME/CFS.
I've never used famotidine.

I have never tried it, but I have read several times that Mangosteen helped people with mast cell issues.
Do you , or someone else, tried mangosteen?

Hoi :)
No brain fog and better concentration? That's amazing, i've been living with cotton in my head ever since i became ill.
I will order some fisetin to try soon. Which brand are you using? I can only find one on iherb.com

I'm currently going through the medical mill and i will see a new doc. next week about mastocytosis and MCAS. In NL there's not much knowledge if any at all about MCAS. There are two expertise-centers for mastocytosis and that's it.

Yes it did help me. I was on so many drugs back then for misdiagnosed "lyme disease" that i decided to stop taking it. I totally forgot about it until now lol.

I was diagnosed with MCAS in the US by a specialist. He measured tryptase and histamine, which have been normal, but repeated Chromagranin A and Prostaglandin D2 tests have been consistently high, verifying the MCAS.

My symptoms were pretty well controlled with optimal methylation, B5, and vitamin C, but IVIG flares it up, particularly in my intestines and I get swelling in my neck and brain.

My doctor prescribed ketotifen and fexofenadine to begin with. Boswellia is effective for the brain swelling, and I get curcumin IVs the day after IVIG to reduce the flare (I take 3g a day of Thorne Meriva curcumin already.)

I still has intestinal symptoms, so my doctor dropped the fexofenadine and added ranitidine (Zantac) and cromolyn sodium, which finally controlled the symptoms.

It's a lot to take, so I'm interested in reducing the meds to just what's the most effective. I'm concerned about the Zantac is not good for the microbiome and don't need an acid blocker so am wondering if there is an alternative that could block H2 without affecting the microbiome.

I've attached Dr. Afrin's list of MCAS meds.
