Does anyone know if there's any evidence for this comment on Statnews? Or have I completely missed the discussion, if there was one? https://www.statnews.com/2016/09/21...rome-pace-trial/comment-page-8/#comment-57413

Breaking news here in the UK is that Professor Peter White, one of the main co-authors of the PACE study, has resigned from medical practice. No doubt to avoid disciplinary action by the General Medical Council for misleading the public and misappropriation of public funds (£5,000,000)

I too would like to see the evidence for this.
Would resigning from medical practice still allow him to do research? (Mind you, I am not saying that I WANT him to do research.)

Could this be the start of CFS/ME being recognised for what it is - a real illness ?

I believe there are -
Some UK doctors who know its a real illness & are giving it their all to prove it, understand the cause of it, find treatments & help with the symptoms.
There are the doctors who know what they have been led to believe about CFS/ME but can see the symptoms are real & are trying to help.
Then there's the doctors who were taught it was a mental illness.

Margaret Williams included the following two paragraphs in her recent 'Proof Positive (Revisited)' article:

"In 2004, Professor Peter Denton White was awarded an OBE for “services to medical education”; notices circulating at the time proclaimed him as leading the research into “CFS/ME” and said his OBE was “a well-deserved honour and acknowledgement of his contribution to work on CFS/ME”.

He was born in November 1952: aged only 64, he suddenly retired from clinical practice just before he was compelled by an order of the court to release the raw data from the PACE trial, so any investigation by the General Medical Council for alleged professional misconduct is unlikely to be pursued, but is he guilty of misfeasance in public office?"

I *think* that's where this story comes from, but I'm afraid I have no idea where Margaret got her information.

I haven't been able to find him using this http://www.gmc-uk.org/doctors/register/LRMP.asp, although that only proves he's not on that database, it doesn't prove anything else.
.

He is on the database, screenshot below. ETA, also retiring from practice is not generally a big deal, so not suprised no major announcement about it.

It is interesting to see the date 23 July 1996 as the date for entry on the specialist register for general psychiatry. Can anyone clarify what this means? The reasonable expectation would be that this was the date of qualification as a consultant.

Would this mean that at the time of publication of papers between 1988 and 1996, and his part funding of the Oxford conference in 1993, leading to the description of the Oxford criteria, he was a Registrar. Nothing wrong with this of course, but one is curious to know why the views of a registrar would be regarded as more influential than those of the Professors then practising in the field.

I had always assumed that he was already a consultant with a measure of independence, but a registrar is, I presume, subject to a greater degree of hierarchical constraint and supervision. Was there a supervisor whose pet project this was but who has a lower profile?

The Royal Free Hospital Department of Infectious Diseases wanted to enrol me on the PACE trial in 2004. I had been referred there for the investigation and treatment of a specific infection, yet my first appointment was with their CFS clinic. Peter White was involved with their CFS Clinic then.

Got the treatment I wanted eventually but only because of my veiled threats of legal action if it wasn't forthcoming.

This whole ME/CFS thing is a scam. In the early 1980s 'some people' decided that the treatment of some infections was more trouble than it was worth. Fatally toxic drug therapy was their main worry, which was legitimate I guess.

But calling in the shrinks to hold our hands while talking us into an early grave was not legitimate.
And keeping their secret from the rest of the medical profession was not legitimate.

Parties involved in this scam are guilty of conspiracy at the very least . . . and probably worse. Perhaps Peter White is planning on doing a runner; planning to change his name and emigrate to a safe haven. Ha!

You are reading far too much into this

"The Specialist Register entry date shows their specialty and the date they were first included on the Specialist Register. If the doctor has any sub-specialties, they may also be listed below the specialty with the date they were added. Doctors may work in areas other than the specialty or specialties listed for them in the Specialist Register.

For many doctors the date of entry will be in 1996 as this is when the Specialist Register was established."

(my bolding)
