Gut bacteria destroyed after Flu, need help

I never get 'the flu' it's always a cold that lasts for 2-3 days. This time has been different. Longer incubation period and hit me hard with fever. Woke a few times drenched. I was happy that this Tuesday, after about a week of this flu, it seemed like I had turned the corner and was starting to do much better.

But my gut is not right and hasn't been since this started, I assumed it would kind of "pop" back into place. Today I woke with some very high anxiety that I haven't experienced for a long time. It alleviated somewhat after elimination. During this flu this has been been a recurring theme. I will feel awful then after elimination (has not been solid since) much better.

Today I took some Plantarum and Infantis I've got at the house. Probiotics are the first thing that comes to mind. I was hoping for other suggestions to help my gut. Stop eating comes to mind also. If everything I'm eating feels like poison to my body then it seems like a plausible suggestion.

Anyway, thank you for any suggestions.

so this is what might be happening to us...changes in the gut after flu like illness.....and then CFS. interesting.

@sregan ..maybe .you should get a DNA stool analysis and treat the gut according to what it says? maybe see a specialist.....of course, I would recommend dr. Kenny demeirlier.

Here's a short section from my blog that seems especially relevant:

Iodine and Apoptosis: Iodine is needed by every cell in the body, but tends to concentrate in areas where there is frequent cell regeneration (apoptosis). This includes nasal passages and mucus cells of the stomach lining, where cell regeneration takes place very 2-3 days. If there is insufficient iodine in the body to perform this critical function, dysfunction occurs. -- Sounds to me like this could have some pretty significant implications for digestion and gut health, and affect some of the dynamics associated with leaky gut syndrome.

Eat things your body doesn´t regard as poison?

Of course, that´s easier said than done, but I think a good starting point is the diets that are already out there: FODMAP, Paleo, etc.

I'm having a similar issue. I take probiotics daily. Just getting over the flu but things are not ok in my gut - they aren't usually, but this time it's worse. Poor digestion, bloating etc. I'm thinking the virus has changed something in my gut.

Me too, my own advice did not work - I do not even seem able to digest my ´safe´ foods anymore. How are you now, @sregan?

I have not tried it by myself, but read that mushroom supps are good immunostimulators for these cases (beta glucans). You know, stuff like Reishi, Cordyceps, Maitake, Ganoderma etc. I think they are not indicated for autoimmunity (my case).

I do well on Reishi for allergies so that makes sense. They're meant to have an immune balancing effect - Th1 and Th2.

Hi @sregan----Flu is hellish.... and recuperating often takes far longer than most people estimate. As for healing your gut: I have found great improvements with Resistant starches---the ones I use almost daily are: parboiled rice (rinsed, cooked, and cooled ---then slightly re-heated), boiled potatoes (any kind, leave skins on, boil at a minimum of 45 minutes, then cooled thoroughly... eat slightly re-heated or cold) ....
Additionally, I take:

Probiotics:
1.) Miyarisan (Clostridium Butyricum/from Japan/Amazon.com)
2.) Natren Healthy Trinity (Lactobacillus acidopholus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Lactobacillus bulgaricus)
3.) Symbion for Life (Bacillus coagulans, Bacillus subtilis, Enterococcus faecium)

Foods:
1.) Kimchi (or any fermented foods you like)
2.) plain yoghurt (full fat)
3.) shredded carrot

Digestive Enzymes:
1.) Daily Essential Enzymes (Source Naturals)
2.) Bile Acid Factors (Jarrow)

Other supplements good for gut:
1.) Sunflower lecithin (Swanson)

I hope this helps. I think healing the gut takes time. Be patient with yourself. Be persistent. Be tenacious.

... Additionally, I think Nattokinase, Serrapeptase, or Lumbrokinase.... might be useful. I have not tried any specifically for my gut, but I think Serrapeptase might help. Cheers.

....a few more thoughts: support your liver and gallbladder while healing your gut: I use Bitters (Gentian, Yellow Dock, Burdock, Chanca Piedra/ all extracts from Herb Pharm).... also Milk Thistle extract too (also Herb Pharm/Amazon.com)..... I have found extracts are far better/quicker working than dry herbs (capsules).

Cheers,

Wow I was just going to post something similar. Since Saturday my gut has been rejecting nearly everything I put in it. Even stuff that never bothered me before. My attempts to get back onto a normal (for me) diet have all ended in cramping, bloating, gas, etc and generally not feeling well. Literally the only thing that doesn't seem to cause it is pedialyte and bananas. Everyone says there is a "gut bug" going around, but I didn't have obvious symptoms at the start. No fever, vomiting, nausea, etc...

I've taken some Jarrow Plantarum which has a good effect for me. Then I had to take a weeks worth of Azithromycin.. So I'm batch to scratch. Trying to eat careful and limit sugar and alcohol and wheat and dairy... Today have diarrhea out of the blue. I didn't even feel bad just sudden urgency and almost running to the bathroom. Maybe something I ate?

It could also be that you have some other type of opportunistic 'bug' that showed up while your body was trying to fight the flu. You could try taking colloidal silver, oregano oil, goldenseal, olive leaf or other antiviral/antibacterials and see if they help.

My husband keeps having that from high Manganese and high Sulfur foods. High Molybdenum foods cause him excruciating nerve pain. I have to give him a Copper supplement when this happens, and he has to add black pepper to everything he eats.

I'm back on the Jarrow Plantarum and having really good results with this. It's just a single strain of bacteria but seems like a very important one that I needed.

Toward that end I'm going to work that probiotic angle and see where that gets me. I've ordered the probiotic
Arthur Andrew Medical, Syntol AMD and will add that this week to the Plantarum. I've heard some very good things about this particular probiotic. Some even say it's a cure for Candidia overgrowth.

It could be that the antibiotic has caused your diarrhea. I was on Amoxicillin six weeks ago and ended up with really bad diarrhea for about 10 days. I don't have it anymore, however, my bowels are far from back to normal. I'm hoping that this isn't permanent as I just don't feel well since all of this started and my doctor hasn't really been that much help. What's new there, though!! :(

I think in my case what happened is something triggered histamine intolerance in my GI system. I think I have had some of this for a while, perhaps even before I had CFS, but its going bonkers now. I can't even eat meat without getting symptoms.
