SOD2 A16V & Methylfolate Side Effects

I keep trying methylfolate and experiencing unpleasant side effects around the 200mcg mark. I have been through years of oxidative stress and mitochondrial damage, and my antioxidant status was likely poor. I also have the SOD2 A16v homogyzous mutation.

Naturopathic Dr. Ben Lynch says that if you have a SOD deficiency or mutation, there is a good chance you will experience side effects with methylfolate. He says:

"Solution: The best way to support SOD is to make sure your red blood cell levels of manganese, zinc and copper are in the normal ranges. If they are and you have a SOD snp, then you may need to supplement SOD directly."

--

It looks like there are two premiere SOD supplements options: "Gilisodin" is SOD-rich cannelouple extract bonded onto wheat protein to get it through the digestive system intact. "Extramel" a gluten-free, high-SOD French melon extract mircoencapsulated in palm oil.

It sounds like Dr. Lynch is suggesting to get serum copper & zinc balanced and then try methylfolate again. Then try SOD if needed.

Does anyone have experience improving SOD levels with zinc & copper balancing... or supplementing with SOD? Or with anything that addressed their SOD2 A16V mutation? Please share!

Coincidentally I have been looking precisely into this today. I think I will choose something with SOD + catalase

My finalists include 2 enzyme complexes (thanks to @picante for the suggestion) and 2 SOD+catalase supps (gotta find out if they are made from wheat or not - apparently there is a certain low amount that allows manufacturers to label products as "gluten free".

Edit: I have been supplementing with a multimineral, which has been really useful (locally compounded)

@Sherpa, did you try any SOD supplements? What results did you get?

I'm still trying to figure out how to tolerate methylfolate. I know one of my problems is excess glutamate, which Lynch also talks about.

I stopped taking SOD as I don't need it - my major underlying problem was lack of iodine. I am now up to 1.2mg of methylfolate per day, after supplementing B2.

Did any of you have any luck supplementing SOD2?

I am also homozygous sod2 a16v rs4880 GG along with heterozygous for multiple methylation SNP's and am looking for any information on how to get started as I already have swollen, painful joints and have read methylfolate can worsen them for homozygous SOD2.

Thanks for any help!

what's the connection between SOD and pancreatic enzymes? interesting combo...

I just saw my 23andme data on SOD2 gene is rs4880 A/G...But as the known alleles are C and T on snpedia,
I really don't understand, any explanations to this?

If you go to the government database at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/projects/SNP/snp_ref.cgi?rs=Rs4880 then right above the map view of the gene on the right side there's a "Residue change" from "V(aline)" to "A(lanine)". A bit to the left of that is the corresponding allele change, from T (or A in some research) to C (or G in some research). So your "GG" alleles means you have the Alanine version in the actual enzyme that it creates.

It also clarifies that in the first OMIM entry for the "allelic variants":

The middle allele is the only one changing, from C to T, hence they're referring to the C (G) version as alanine and the T (A) version as valine.

I think I got it from Valentin post! AG is in fact TC! Rather confusing...
