Long Term Effects Of Mold VOC exposure?

end

I am posting this on behalf of a friend.

He spent 3 years in a unit complex which had NO visible mold signs, although the INSIDE of the timber/drywall walls were infested with Mold!

As he suffered at that premises he now suffers at any premises with ANY VOC! - new paint, carpet, MDF kitchens.

These are the EXACT symptoms he had at the mold place and now at any place with new paint, carpet etc like previously mentioned.

His symptoms being:

"trying to hold the breath, discomfort, or through sensations such as itching, burning, and skin crawling."

Mold Irritations

Fungal exposure can also come from any volatile compounds (VOCs) that a fungi/mold creates through primary or secondary metabolism that then becomes airborne. (Primary metabolic processes are those necessary to sustain the life of an organism.) These volatile compounds may be constantly created as the fungus
consumes its food source during the primary metabolic process. VOCs can irritate the mucous membranes of the eyes and respiratory system.

Fungi that consume certain organic sources can release highly toxic gases. For instance, a fungus that grows on wallpaper often releases toxic gas arsine directly from the wallpaper that contains arsenic pigments. Thus, fungi and molds can release dangerous materials when they break down the host material. This can cause mucous
membrane irritation in sensitized individuals.

Fungal volatile compounds may impact the "common chemical sense" which senses pungency and responds to it. This sense is primarily associated with the trigeminal nerve. The sensory and motor nerves respond to pungency by trying to hold the breath, discomfort, or through sensations such as itching, burning, and skin crawling.
Changes in sensation, swelling of mucous membranes, constriction of respiratory smooth muscle, or dilation of surface blood vessels may be part of fight or flight reactions in response to trigeminal nerve stimulation. Reactions often include a reduced attention level, general disorientation, lowered reflex time, dizziness, etc.

Volatile Compounds found in or around homes can be responsible for mucous membrane irritants. It is thought that fungi can add to the already existing compounds when breaking down certain organic substances. A mold-contaminated building may have a significant contribution from its fungal contaminants that is added to common VOCs---building materials, paints, plastics and cleaners. VOCs in general can result in symptoms that include lowered attention span, headaches, lack of concentration, and dizziness.

Reaction to Mold Odors

Some individuals have very strong reactions to the smells given off by molds. Among humans, there is a high degree of variation in ability to detect these odors. Certain individuals can detect low levels of VOCs, while others can only detect relatively high levels. Those individuals who are particularly susceptible to mold odors may react with headache, nasal stuffiness, nausea or even vomiting. Asthmatics often exhibit symptoms when exposed to certain odors.

Has anyone come across this them selves and know what to do about it treatment wise???

@slayadragon - PR Mold Guru, any idea's?

Is the body simply overloaded with mold toxins and can not handle any extra toxins?

Or

Has the body simply become sensitised to VOC's?

He should be okay if he used a CIRS protocol by Dr. Shoemaker, or at least something of the like. As long as he does not have too much built up toxins then small exposure shouldn't cause harm.

I have actually used CSM in the past which strangely enough calmed me down a LOT! I think the absorption of neurotoxins that CSM elicits reduces the neurotoxicity on our CNS/brain.

He is currently using Chlorella and Fish oil as it apparently works like CSM with out the supplement absorption issues CSM inflicts.

Will have that checked out @ahmo.

Nothing seems to be helping him currently though. Antihistamines do nothing and testing IgE for multiple fungal strains have not come back as being "allergic".

@end My answer to all detox issues has become: try coffee enemas. Whatever is going on, the liver gets overwhelmed trying to get rid of toxins. I haven't found anything more effective.

A coffee enema, when done properly, causes the liver to produce more bile, opens the bile ducts and causes the bile to flow. In this process, a toxic liver can dump many of its toxins into the bile and get rid of them in just a few minutes. This often gives great relief to all parts of the body, and often makes the difference between lying down feeling miserable and feeling good and being active. Coffee Enemas are also effective in relieving pain. Patients with cancer, for example, may achieve relief from pain even when drugs failed.

From the hundreds of cases that I have seen, people who become sick with toxic mold illness invariably become hyperreactive to small amounts of mold toxins. (This needs to be studied!)

Many people also become hyperreactive to chemicals, foods and other substances as well.

One possibility with regard to causality is that satratoxin (a trichothecene poison made by Stachybotrys mold) has been shown to cause perforations in the blood-brain barrier (as well as in the gut lining). This may allow substances that are not supposed to be in the brain to get inside and therefore to cause harm to the delicate neurons.

Another possibility is that some mold toxins (such as the Penitrem A made by Penicillium Crustosum) and some aquatic biotoxins (such as those made by certain species of cyanobacteria) have a negative effect on the hippocampus and amygdala in the brain. This can cause a destabilization/kindling effect, which could cause the variety of sensitivities seen in ME/CFS and other illnesses.

Unfortunately, I have yet to see any magic potions that will fix the blood-brain barrier even suggested. And although "amygdala retraining" is popular, insofar as people are continuing to get exposures to toxins that either cause destruction to the endothelial cells in the brain or that cause destabilization of the brain by damaging the amygdala, the effects of such techniques may reasonably be expected to be limited.

Many patients who have practiced mold avoidance (as developed by Erik Johnson) and effectively pursued detox have stated that eventually over time, their chemical sensitivities and then eventually their mold toxin sensitivities have decreased substantially. This has not happened with every patient, and even when it works, it generally takes years.Whatever the problem is, it seems to take a long time to repair itself even when the stress of the toxins are removed from the picture.

For those interested, there are a good many links to information about mold avoidance on the Paradigm Change website. So that may be a good place to start.

So Lisa in other words there is nothing my friend can do apart from Mold avoidance and Detox for his symptoms?

Primarily being: "trying to hold the breath, discomfort, or through sensations such as itching, burning, and skin crawling."

He has recently seen some one in Queensland who specialises in Mold treatment(ie Dr Shoemakers CSM protocol)however he was unable to offer any insight/explanation or medication for his dermal symptoms :(

Would seeing a dermatologist help?

Does chlorella contain iodine? anybody?

Solution below solution below solution below

I would like to share my experience and the coping methods I have discovered. This will work like a charm. I will share the evidence from research in the area published 2015.

In regards to air quality i am severly hypersensitive to vocs. Mold, dust, paints, leather, pvc, aerosols, formaldehyde, fragrances, pretty much all vocs, the list is quite large.

I recently came across the following study and let me tell you now WHAT A GOD SEND
Reversibility of chronic degeneratI've desease and hypersensitivity, VOL 3: Diagnostic considerations of chemical sensitivity

http://www.amazon.com/Reversibility-Chronic-Degenerative-Disease-Hypersensitivity/dp/1439813469

This is the 2015 edition with over ten years of study in the area. One of the advice I grasped from their research and follow up research by others was the 90%fat 10%protein diet based on your calorific daily needs. Immediately my hypersensitivity reduced. I had to also give up eggs, seafood poultry as I had also become slightly sensitive to these as well. This came as a suprise to me. Lactulose was another suggestion which I now take with every meal and these two things do help. I admit I can't always keep to the 90 10 and when I relapse and start slipping back into hypersensitivity I eat a fatty low carb low protein meal and it soon helps. You careful have to be very careful with the fat intake and the effects on your body. Too much fat can cause other problems if you go overboard. Calculator and nutritional research/breakdown of your meals

If you read this and it works for please be kind enough to share with others across forums m. Hopefully this will help others.
