Test strips for CBS mutation

My homocysteine last measured 9.1, which is definitely within range (<11.4). But SAMe is low at 207 (range is 221-2560). Urine sulfate appears to be about 700.

Does this suggest that I do NOT have CBS up regulation? Or maybe just a little?

I'm just starting Yakso's protocol and would like to skip the CBS portion and move on if it's not necessary, but want to err on the side of caution if there's a chance. Would appreciate your thoughts...

Even thou its within range many specialists like to see homocysteine lower then what your's currently is. I dont have the CBS thing (well may as Ive got very low molybdenum and never have been tested for CBS) I have MTHFR polymorphism and 2 of my specialists wanted my homeocystine level 7 or under. A higher level of homoeocysteine increases risk of certain things. So I think should look into that more.

I thought I needed to get my SNP tested to find about this, or is this something different? Just ordered 23andme btw, can't wait for the results. All my problems will be solved:lol:(sarcasm for those without a sense of humor)

I'm confused. I ordered the Sulfite strips from Yasko's site. I have read here people referring to ranges of 400, 800, 1200 and so on, but my chart only goes up to 400. The color options to compare to strip results on my bottle are 10,40,80,180, 400 mg/l. Are these the same? Has anyone used them?

I thought certainly the Yasko folks would have thrown in some instructions of their own, but no such luck.

I believe the 400-1200 range is for the sulfate strips.

what concerns me is that from my understanding, a vast majority of people have a cbs mutation and yasko suggests that everyone "clear" their cbs issues.... what ever that means. when 90% of the population (that's heartfixer's experience) has a risk allele, can we really say that this is abnormal? i can't imagine that 90% of people shouldn't be eating sulfur. true some do better on lower sulfur but we don't know why... placebo or possibly other reasons as well. just sayin'.

Caledonia said she was able to tolerate a higher methylation dose after dealing with her CBS issue. Has anyone else had the same experience?

dbkita: The Quantofix work great for me. They have helped to me to get a better understanding of what things I eat affect my sulfate status which correlates with ammonia production. The surprise for me was there was less impact than I thought from protein (though there is of course some) but there is also quite a bit from thiol rich foods and the amount of mb12 I take.

Hi there, could you comment more on what you notice with the amount of mb12 that you take? Have had ++success with molybdenum & manganese supp/as well as sulphur restriction & ammonia clearing. Have been experimenting with mb12 supp, with mixed results. Have not done genetics testing yet, just treating and figuring out as per symptoms.
Thank-you kindly for any info :) Star

Hey Patrick, just a tidbit of info re: CBS protocol. Interesting I noticed that I could tolerate *WAY* more foods once I did a few weeks of CBS protocol, & cleared out ammonia. I couldn't tolerate the yucca as Yasko suggested, but used charcoal/magnesium flushes instead. I think *maybe* in Yasko's book she talks about this, and how the excess sulphur, and inability to process it properly leads to this agitation and overacting of immune/adrenal systems causing lots of crazy food intolerance, especially to salicylates. I was on solid antihistamines for a good couple of months to tolerate very basic low salicylate, vegan, low-amines foods. As well, I am now looking into copper toxicity, and have noticed such an added ability to tolerate foods as I have been eating low-copper, as well as low-sulphur.
All the best, Star :)

Oh help. I am an obvious newbie and just want to know what strips to get. Sulphate? Sulfite? Both? Neither? Where? My brain is blown just reading the posts above....you all are clearly in a different league than I am....but.....is there anyone out there that can very, very concisely say: Get these, and where? (Preferably the cheapest place for the right stuff)...I do have CBS issues and have been advised to obtain urine strips. Can anyone help and seriously dumb down your answer so the duller amongst us (that would be me) can actually comprehend? Thank you...so much!

TSoule,

a quick message since i am fending off my own symptoms right now.

since you requested a quick recommendation, get the quantofix sulphate strips from amazon. get them expedited if you think the temperature will exceed the manufacturer's recommended 30C limit.

they are much cheaper than yasko's strips and other people on that product page are using them to manage cbs.

idk, I never did it. I am CBS +/+. I just look at homocysteine and if it's good, my protocol is doing its job. I wonder if using those strips will provide better control because of more frequent measurements? I would not trust them alone (w/o a SAMe or homocysteine measurement), but it might be useful inbetween. I have never really considered spending the money on the strips. Please report back on how they help you.

this websiote (my doctor) says to use the sulfATE test strips: http://www.heartfixer.com/AMRI-Outcomes-Non-CV-Autism-Methyl Cycle.htm#CBS: Cystathione Beta Synthase

I think that web site is really confused. Isn't the sulfur pathway defect about failure to convert sulfite - which is neurotoxic - into sulfate - which is extremely beneficial in the appropriate range and used to help the liver in detox pathways? I think that website reversed the two!!

At minimum, you want is sulfite test strips for urine. Because there is no good blood test, and it's convenient to test this on an ongoing basis. And sulfite is the one that is outright dangerous and must be kept under control. If I had to choose between high sulfate and high sulfite, I would be much more concerned about high sulfite. Am I wrong people?

Independently, it would not hurt to order sulfate strips. Because some people will manifest these defects by both high sulfite and high sulfate. Others will show high sulfite and low sulfate. Knowing both values is helpful in understanding where the pathway is broken.

I actually had to supplement sulfate, because part of the defect is that sulfite fails to convert to sulfate, and you end up testing either low on sulfate or low-normal. Sulfate is so beneficial that people with this defect normally respond well to getting more. But of course after you supplement for a while test again and make sure you are not in some crazy off-the-scale range.

triifid113 "my adrenal gland craps out from insufficient zinc leading to insufficient thyroxine, etc)"

I have pyroluria (in addition or because of the CBS +-) which wastes zinc and b6 in breakdown of heme it also allows copper and estrogen to get to very high levels. High zinc and p5p are needed permanently with pyroluria.

Can you please talk more about this connection your have made with zinc and thyroxine (any anything else)?

TY

For me ammonia is the one that I have to watch out for since it affects inflammation and pain and lowers BH4. I seem to have my sulfites well in hand with molybdenum supplements.

If you get a chance getting a baseline 24 hour urine sulfate may be useful also.
I am trying the test strips and the colors are so similar . I can't figure out the distinctions at all. I don't know how you decipeher the results
