Valvular heart disease is any disease process involving one or more of the valves of the heart.
The heart has four valves.

1. Aortic valve
2. Mitral valve
3. Tricuspid valve
4. Pulmonary valve

Valve disease can manifests itself by narrowing of the valve opening (stenosis) or/and by not closing properly (regurgitation)
So..valvular heart disease could manifest it self with one or more undermentioned valve abnormalities:

• Aortic valve stenosis
• Mitral valve stenosis
• Tricuspid valve stenosis
• Pulmonary valve stenosis
• Aortic regurgitation
• Mitral regurgitation
• Tricuspid regurgitation
• Pulmonary regurgitation

Coxsackie viruses could mimics a rheumatic valve disease resulting in Mitral valve stenosis and/or Aortic valve stenosis or/and Aortic regurgitation and/or Mitral regurgitation and/or Tricuspid regurgitation.

In my case:
In 1992 I started to suffer from chronic nausea with chronic throat pain and chronic stuffy nose. (probably a chronic enterovirus infection)
In 2001 I developed Mitral regurgitation, Aortic regurgitation and Aortic stenosis. My cardiologists could not explain my valvular disease. I'm sure it's because of my chronic enterovirus infection

About dr Cheney:
Cheney finds something else on his patients echocardiograms. He finds a diastolic dysfunction (abnormality in the heart's filling during diastole) that is according to him related to low ATP in the heart.

Thank you so much, you two. I am going to save this information. I think this is what got my CFS going--an enterovirus infection--maybe in combination with XMRV. I haven't gotten tested yet but am circling in closer.

Yea, I think mine is enteroviral origin as well...coxsackie B has been an issue for me ...havent tested for XMRV as of yet

The textbook on ME/CFS from the early 90's which Dr. Hyde edited, featuring chapters by a host of experts at that time, wrote that their hypotheses about causation centered on two possiblities: enteroviruses and retroviruses. That is where suspicion lay most strongly--

Thank you Emootje. Thank you Sling for your MP on this. I will have to check if the infectious disease specialist has already check for coxsackie viruses. The nausea and the sore throat could be explained by this.

If you would have a choice of seeing one of the world's CFS specialists which one would you choose? and why? Would Dr. Cheney be the best choice ? (This would make a good thread - we should ask everyone!). =-)

I think XMRV/MLV with a co-infection is the best hypothesis for this disease. It explains why different (viral) triggers resulted in the same syndrome.
For patients with an enteroviral trigger it looks something like this:



Gamma Retrovirus mono-infection: No symptoms
Gamma Retrovirus with co-infection: ME symptoms



NF kappa beta (inflammation) stimulate XMRV replication
