How do we evaluate studies?

I came across this new book entitled "Testing Treatments" that is available for free download www.testingtreatments.org. I've just started it, but it seems very interesting and useful in evaluating the various studies we see on CFS, maybe giving us a more intelligent way of discussing treatments we may want to try with our own doctors, and maybe better evaluating whether a suggested treatment for some other problem may be helpful or harmful (or nothing but a waste) in our situation. Chapter headings:
New - but no better or even worse
Used but inadequately tested
Key concepts in fair tests of treatments
Dealing with uncertainty about the effects of treatments
Clinical research: the good, the bad, and the unnecessary
Less research, better research, and research for the right reasons
Improving tests of treatments is everybody's business
Blueprint for a revolution
