I have seen scattered reports of this village before. What prompted me to post was the mention of CFS in the article.

"Mysterious Kazakhstan Sleeping Sickness ‘Could Spread’

A leading Russian professor investigating the causes of the mysterious sleeping disorder affecting hundreds of residents in Kalachi, a village in northern Kazakhstan, believes that the disease could spread...."

Rikhvanov does not presently believe the disease to be a completely new one, as the symptoms are similar to chronic fatigue syndrome disease, caused by radiation, but says that if cases continued to grow, and there is still no scientific consensus, it could be classed as a new disease.

The reference to radiation between CFSD and radiation is a little odd.

That does not sound anything like I have heard. We go down with flue like symptoms. Not sleep comatose like hit and run.

Its not odd actually. Various chronic fatigue syndromes have been identified and post radiation fatigue is one of them. Post cancer another. Many post pathogen fatigue states. Etc.

The National CFIDS Foundation believe radiation to be the cause of CFS

Sorry, my tunnel brain thought was completely thinking directly to the article in it's reference to radon.

Who knows what else may have been stored (dumped) in that mine prior to it becoming flooded?

5 years after the onset of ME/CFS/SEID I had cancer and radiation therapy. Oddly enough about 9 months post radiation therapy was the beginning of the best year I had since becoming ill. As usual that didn't last and the last 6 months have approached the worst I have ever been.

Here is a link to a page with an embedded video. This has apparently been happening for at least a year or more and it occurs in waves.

It doesn't sound anything like CFS to be honest. More along the lines of encephalitis lethargica.

I used to think that the radiation theory of CFS was nonsense. Then I read some this:
    http://www.healingwell.com/community/?f=15&m=2182543

I know that many people who have radiation treatment for cancer are fine and recover, but if there are a small number of people who get CFS from radiation treatment, like those in that forum, then it is plausible that it could cause a few/ some cases.
I still don't believe radiation causes all cases of ME/CFS.
