not sleeping really sux. I dont know if theres really an answer but the best way i have found to cope is to alternate between a few different meds for sleep so that u dont get a tolerence or a need to increase doses, but in saying this i still go through bad runs of insomnia.

cheers!!!

Sorry to hear you're going through this. I did too for years .. ugh ... I have such bad memories of my pre holistic medicine days .. .

I take melatonin, theanine and 5htp if I can't sleep. Nowadays I take 1.25 mel and 50 mg 5htp, but if I simply can't sleep at all, I'll take all three in varying doses up to 9 mg mel, 300 mg theanine and 300 mg thtp. I don't seem to need as much now that I'm on the Wahls diet.

Looking for triggers for your symptoms can be tricky and time consuming but it's easier once you're diet is clean. Dr. Wahls has the cleanist I'm aware of ...

tc ... x

Have you tried high dose hydroxyB12 for the pain? You can get it pretty much anywhere, and cheaply. I'm off mine temporarily to get lab tests, and I can attest that it makes a huge difference in pain levels. :(

A suggestion (well the only thing that got me through that awful stage) - Gabapentin/Neurontin originally prescribed low dose for pain only I increased to full epileptic dose - it resulted in sound sleep and during the day I rose only to eat etc. Can't remember duration probably 3-4 weeks then gradual lowering dose to none. The result of sleeping and less pain was a bit of a turn round (no cure) but a bit of a milestone. Doc prescription only.

Sounds like you do need to be taking something else to improve things for yourself.. unfortunately yes many things are expensive.

Try to treat anything which is stopping you from sleep.

I have prescription pills for the times I over do things and get nausea and are close to vomiting (ones which are also used for patients who have chemo sickness).

Maybe ask your doctor to see if you can have a script for some, they sure have helped me to feel a lot better when Ive had to take them (thou i feel more sick for the first half an hour after them but then things settle).

I dont know thou what helps nightmares.. I some times get woken by those too. Recently thou Ive connected my nightmares to one of my sleep drugs may be giving me more of them (the drug is still worth me taking cause it does get me to sleep great). Consider if any of your drugs is making you get more.

Melatonin is very cheap, I think you could get a 3mg dose for about $1/month. I know my Rite aid often has it buy one, get one free, or 1/2price and it is about $7 for 250 tablets.

Just found this recently in an email: http://www.iherb.com/Free-Samples

I had a major flare up 2.5 years ago, and found a good Dr who prescribed me a med for sleep, it is an anti-depressant, I have only increase the dosage slightly since starting it. it's the only antidepressant I take, and it has helped a lot. I used wake frequently, now I go down for hours and often fall asleep at the computer!

I can't tolerate most drugs for pain & sleep...but I did have to address pain issues first.
Two things helped get rid of pain for a long time...having facet block injections of xylocaine, marcaine & cortisone to the arthritic cervical facet joints at 2 levels (so 4 injections)...
...and a short trial of gabapentin (Neurontin) 100mg (which is a low dose) helped with pain & sleep, but unfortunately had some nasty side effects on my eyes...got sudden onset dry eyes, loss of lipid layer, lowered eye pressures/shrunken eyeballs...not good!...but guess I was susceptible sigh...am having some improvement of eyes after taking Fish Oil...and more improvement of eyes on B2 (Riboflavin). I am not needing to take any drugs currently for pain or sleep. I also have regular Chinese Massage Therapy where my therapist focuses on the muscles around my cervical/upper thoracic spine, upper back and lumbar spine area. This helps, but only if not having a flare of Psoriatic spondylitis.

B2 (Riboflavin) is now helping me sleep after only a few days on it. It is helping me get to sleep (so less insomnia) breathe better, have less sinus mucus/congestion, and is relaxing my muscles overnight. I used to wake with muscles still tight after a night's sleep. My mood in daytime is also improved, and I have a bit more energy. Still need a day-time nap. There is a thread going regarding B2 (Riboflavin) under Hair Mineral Analysis.

Hope you find something that helps soon.

I have been having many issues sleep related for months now. I have finally made an appt. to see a sleep specialist to help me. I have already had a sleep study done 2 years ago. I wake up every day totally unrefreshed even if I sleep 5-6 hours straight...which hasn't been happening for a long time. Now I am waking the same times everynight.
Two nights ago I woke at 1:30 with major adrenaline surging and was never able to fall back to sleep and I had to work the next morning. UGH

I am starting neurontin for the neuropathy pain in my leg and foot in the hopes that will help. I also take lunesta which hardly works at all anymore. I can fall asleep but then wake 4-5 times a night.

If you are having serious issues then I would recommend seeing a specialist. I feel terrible everyday and a huge reason is my poor quality, disrupted sleep. I also have nightmares often.

melantonin never did anything for me but helps my husband because he works nights and has to shift his sleep weekly. But like GG said it is cheap so worth a try.

I understand where you are coming from on this whole sleep problem...it is probably tops for me as far as ruining my quality of life. If I could get a good sleep I know I would feel so much better and not so tired all day.

GG- what do you take for sleep? I have tried trazadone but it only made me drowsy and very hung over the following day. I have tried it over and over but it just doesn't work for me...

normal people would be whinging about only 5-6 hours sleep in a row and saying how tired they are, but many of us cfsers think 5-6hours in a row is a good sleep?? its better then we normally get but its still not good really but we take what we can get. if we could get 8-9 hours sleep i think we would feel alot better.

good luck sox.

thanks for the ideas...i actually take risperidol {spelled? the generic} but i cant remember where i put it or either acidentally threw it away with my anxiety medications.....im lucky to not had serious side effects i checked on interent and had also brought it up to my conseolour...i have anxiety, aggitation, and the insomnia which is always there but worse after being out of medication..i was going to call prescribing doctor for another prescription if had serious side effects but i dont want to if i can tough it out becuse ive heard of people being sespected of abusing medications if they call and say they lost etc..

im going to have hubby pick up some melatonin sounds like its works for some of you, thanks for all the ideas....i have the morphine for pain whcih helps alot it calms me down and sedates me..im still taking usual dose though.,..doctor recommened walking when i can said it will help over all and that it will help me sleep...i did a few times with daughter after taking the morphine but it didnt help me sleep it made me sore

funny last time we walked an older lady come walking fast by us and made remark that we girls were really fast and she said for some reason that she had a knee replacement or surgery..me and my daughter smiled but my daugheter was like...thats weird we are going alot slower than her...just made think of how you never know what a person is going through in their lives...she probably thought we walk all the time...we are healthy and happy..but the whole time i hated the fact that i had to take morphine just to have a walk with my daughter...

i wish i could have a normal day...no pain..no exhasution..no falres after doing the littlest thing...no morphine to take a walk..just go out and jog like i use to then sleep all night long...
hoping the melatonin works for me...thanks again..

I take 3mg of melatonin, 4 mg of tinzanidine, 4.5 mg of LDN and 30 to 37.5 mg of Remeron. Been on these for at least 2 years now.

GG

PS CPAP with oxygen also.

hurting...I already had the sleep study done 2 years ago but never followed up. I only slept 2.5 hours for the study so they told me it wasn't any good. It did say in the short time I slept that no apnea or RLS was indicated. I don't know if the doctor will want me to have another one or not. I will if my insurance will pay for it and they will have to give me something to really knock me out.
You should only be taking 3mg of the melantonin because you can actually take too much of the stuff. It is a hormone which our bodies are suppose to make naturally and if you already have enough then you don't want to overload on it.

I was tested a year ago through saliva and it was low at night but the doctor had me only taking 1.5mg. I was breaking the 3mg in half. It didn't really help so I stopped taking it. I have no idea why the stores sell such high doses of it when not necessary. I work in a pharmacy and we also sell a 5mg.
If I were you I would at least cut the 10mg in half.
I will let you know what the doctor says on Friday....hope he can help
