Supplementing with zinc but still low

My father (58yo) has been supplementing with about 40mg of Zinc gluconate/picolinate for quite awhile now an I recently had him do a Zinc challenge with the liquid zinc solution. Despite the regular supplementation the liquid zinc still tasted like water with no after taste indicating he is still quite low in zinc.

The question I have at this point is what are the normal options for someone in a situation like this? Do they work up to a super dosing like 150-200mg/day for 1-2 months or something else?

FWIW - He had been taking B6 and a couple of weeks ago switched over to supplementing with P5P instead. He also
