Phthalates stuff up hormones in mammals. Nearly everyone is peeing them out, we consume so much of this stuff. We simply do not fully know what they are doing to us. Unborn children, particularly female children, have a lot of epigenetic modification going on. Hormone alternations at early stages of life could impact the child for their entire life. This needs more research.

I used to live between an Air Force base and a Navy base and both flew many jets overhead and out to sea daily. Studies have shown that the ground is polluted with the break-down chemicals from jet fuel (let alone the air!) and that crops grown in this area also carry those chemicals.
