The use of "N-of-1 clinical trials" is supported by Dr. Francis Collins, Director, NIH (12/14/2017 blog):

The new CFSAC "Working Group on Clinical/Treatment Trials" formed three days ago at CFSAC's December 13-4, 2017 Meeting could look into this. Sounds easier to implement than a large trial...and less expensive.

Also at that meeting Dr.Montoya presented the case of a patient he successfully treated with an antiviral and Celebrex. Case studies of single patients like this could be written up and published as educational tools.

Videos of the two-day CFSAC meeting will be posted on YouTube.
